In The Valley Of Elah is one of a slew of Iraqi War themed movies coming out way. Why were you attracted to the subject matter?
I began this process in 2003. This was a time when our president was telling us it was unpatriotic to even question this war, where the Democrats were agreeing with him, and most of my liberal friends were saying, “Yes, there’s a reason, you know.” I watched these videos on the internet that our [troops] were shooting and I thought, Things are happening that we’re not aware of here, and it’s not being discussed. And if it’s not being discussed in the media, then it falls to the artist, the filmmakers, to pose the questions that are very disturbing. And why make easy films?
