    Alan Rickman was robbed - he totally deserved a nomination for his fabulous (though admitedly under-used) portrail of Severus Snape in Harry Potter. Plus, the guy just rocks in any movie he is in. The Oscars have failed to recognise the brilliant talent that's out there as listed by @AgentMcQueen.

    Agreed AgentMcQueen. Seriously predictable list going on here apart from maybe best supporting actor. Omissions for Drive and Shame are scandalous! I mean was 'The Help' actually that good? How did Jonah Hill manage a nomination over Albert Brooks?     No Ryan Gosling/ Michael Fassbender for best actor?, The Help nominated ahead of Drive/ Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy/ The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo?, No Nicolas Winding Refn/ David Fincher for best director?, Rango in the best animation catorgory but not Tintin?, Jessica Chastain not nominated for Tree of life?, Must be Oscar time again! One can only hope the BAFTA's will right these wrongs!

    @ChrisWooton what's wrong with Jonah Hill being nominated for an Oscar? Just because he is a comedian? did you see Moneyball he was very good and its hard to think any other actor in that role besides him.

    Thank God Gary Oldman got nominated. He is one of the greatest actors ever. Amazing performance in Tinker,Tailor, Soldier, Spy as in every other movie he steps in. He must get it this time.

    Another 'What?' from me on behalf of Albert Brooks. Take Gosling Brooks and Cranston out of Drive and it was very ordinary with some good set pieces so i can maybe see why it wouldnt win best film (still should have been nominated though). Ditto for Refn as director. 3 of the 5 best actors have been far better in other things, im tempted to say Dujardin as i havent seen A Better Life. Oldman...i want him to win, but this would be in the Scorcese 'You should have won for something else' category. Fassbender should get a nom next year-he seems to be in a lot.

    if the oscars raised the amount of best film nominations due to the apparent outcry from the dark knight not being nominationed in 2008, Why do they persist in overlooking critically acclaimed films? We could get into a long debate into what films should be up there or not but to overlook films such as tinker tailor, drive and even senna ( I know its a doc but it doesn't stop them nominating animated films in the best film category ) just confuses me. These are films that are not only well recieved by critics but also by film fans across the globe. I mean for f***s sake! You have got harry potter and the deathly hallows part 2, the final installment in the biggest, most successful film franchise in history, over 1 billion at the box office and 96% on rotten tomatoes, but they rather nominate the help! I thought 10 nominations was meant to prevent this.

    I happen to find it really funny that Dicaprio didn't get a nom when it's obviously his sole reason for most of his choices. But at the same time Charlize Theron deserved one I think.

    Good news on Gary Oldmans and Nick Noltes nod, no Senna for best documentary (F1 not big US). Also, how the fudge can you have 9 films in contention but only 5 directors nominated? Did the other 4 films direct themselves? Have a word.

    Think it goes to show what a weak year it was for films... But yeah Nick Nolte. Fully deserved and nice to see a little bit of love for Warrior. Agree Drive got robbed but wasn't getting my hopes up for it.

    REALLY?! Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close?! b******t. I'm sorry, but that film got mixed reviews at best! Why not Harry Potter? Or Rise of the Planet of the Apes? Or... SOMETHING that critics and audiences both near universally loved. Heck, I haven't seen Drive OR Extremely Loud, but it sounds like Drive was more deserving!

    I suspect J.Edgar arrived a little late in the day for most of the voters. Extremely Loud and Incredbly Close is another attempt by Stephen Daldrey to brown-nose an Oscar, his recent efforts The Reader and The Hours are obviously catered towrd the awards season, only Billy Elliot was a deliberate crowd-pleaser, Im glad AMPAS saw sense and omiited him from the nominations. Anyway I don't know why people are going on about Harry Potter deserving an Oscar, at the end of the day it was a good bit of popcorn, hardly a groundbreaking achievement like Return of the King. Lets not forget the Oscars are dodgy when it comes to handing out the gongs, does anyone believe really believe that Gwyneth Paltrow is a better actress than Meryl Streep or Cate Blanchett? And that Paltrow didnt win because her parents are/were hollywood royalty? And Shawshank losing to FORREST GUMP FFS. Phew! Enjoy the show.

    What about Patton beating Five Easy Pieces/M*A*S*H, Rocky beating Taxi Driver, Kramer vs Kramer beating Apocolypse now, Ordinary People beating Raging Bull, Ghandi beating E.T, Silence of the Lambs beating JFK, The English patient beating Fargo, Titanic beating L.A Confidential, Shakespeare in Love beating Saving Private Ryan/The Thin Red Line, A Beautiful Mind beating Fellowship of the Ring, Million Dollar Baby beating Sideways, Crash beating Brokeback Mountain/Munich? The fact is more often than not the Oscars reward the wrong film!

    What a joke. The omissions of Tilda Swindon, Senna and Take Shelter are an absolute disgrace. The following should win: Streep, Oldman, Plummer, Chastain (Although she is nominated for the wrong movie) and Tree Of Life (BP and D). I also think the Animated Feature contains it's weakest list ever. One final thought, although I've not seen Moneyball I believe Brad Pitt should have been nominated for TOL.

    I duno why you are surprised now that Oldman is nominated i swear when TTSS came out i remember you guessing this would occur. maybe i imagined it. But he should win. I love Shame and Fassbender was amazing but I am glad he wasnt nominated because in my opinion he is Oldmans only real competition this year so without him the chameleon that is Gary Oldman may finally get an oscar. Also so glad for Mellisa Macarthy and Jonah Hill they are both brilliant actors and deserve the nominations. I just been reading up on who is in the academey and a few people that are nominated are in it surely that makes it bias . I never really thought of who may be part of the academy until now so I guess i am just being dumb here
