Whilst director Ridley Scott has recently referred to Prometheus as an original science-fiction yarn, the first we’d heard of it was as a long-awaited prequel to the Alien franchise.
With rumours of Scott returning to the series having been kicking around for the better part of thirty years, it was finally announced in summer 2009 that the British director would indeed be presiding over a new Alien film. Advert-director Carl Rinsch had initially been attached to the project, only for Fox to insist on bagging Ridley, perhaps mindful of what happened the last time they opted for a director with that sort of background (David Fincher…we’re looking at you).
Scott revealed that his intention was to create a “really nasty” return to the series origins, and the sci-fi horror sensibilities that had been lost over years of AVP tie-in movies. Not only that, but he revealed a firm idea was in place, with an unexplained plot point from the original set to provide a jumping-off point for the new film…

An archaeological dig in Morocco??? LAME. Of course they have to kill the mystery by involving Earth in the story.

Not sure if there's some confusion here, but the script 'Whoa Is Not Me' are mentioning there is fact Jon Spaiht's earlier script, 'Shadow 19'. It's an awesome screenplay, but certainly nothing to do with the 'Alien' universe as far as I picked up on. It was written by Spaihts, I believe, after another sci-fi screenplay he wrote called 'Passengers', the combination of which convinced those involved he was the man for the job. Of course, I suppose it's possible that elements of 'Shadow 19' have been cannibalised and used, but the technological scope of the story (to me) wouldn't fit in the chronological context of the Alien movies. Just sayin'

It's really confused me. If the rumour is true about the space jockey being in it then it's part of the Alien universe and a prequel. But if it's based on a stand-alone script and Scott says it's not part of the Alien story then there just seems to be loads of mixed signals being put out. I'm a massive fan of Alien and would like nothing more than to see him return to the franchise.
