Two months before JJ Abrams’ Star Trek reboot hit cinema screens, Paramount Pictures knew it had a good thing on its hands – on 30 March 2009, the studio hired ST writing team Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof to start work on the script for Star Trek 2.
The writers were understandably cautious about talking up the sequel, though, especially considering Star Trek hadn’t even been released yet. Talking to Variety, Kurtzman said:
“Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month. With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We’ll be ambitious about what we’ll do.”
