Idris Elba makes a stand
Action, villains and more
Universal postpone production in wake of Paul Walker's tragic death
The Character: Publishing editor whose affair with married Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas) unleashes a Fatal Attraction of latent jealousy and homicidal rage against household pets. Poor bunny.
The Actress:Jagged Edge had pushed the acclaimed supporting actress into leading roles, setting her up nicely for a mainstream thriller requiring nuanced, realistic villainy. The Performance: The film, especially in its reshot ending, wants to turn Alex into a monster. But Close is far more interesting in portraying scarily plausible mental illness.

Even more known from the TV-Series (but there were the two movies), I would have added "Dana Scully" in this list.

Clementime is way too high on the list & where is Mrs. Carmody from The Mist? One of the best female villains ever.

Clementine is way too high on the list & where is Mrs. Carmody from The Mist? One of the best female villains ever.

Princess Mononoke, Marla Singer and Marietta Fortune should all definitely be there.
Mar 14th 2011, 11:10
I would replaced a few with Ree Dolly (Winters Bone), Wednesday Addams, Connie Corleone and Aughra (The Dark Crystal) and Anna (Predator).

WAR RIPLEY, WAR!!!!!!!!!
Great list. I got more excited as it went on. Yeah, there are some I would delete and some I would add.
But the only true mistep is Hitgirl. I mean really? Have a child utter the c-word and create a cult icon? Hardly.
In 10 years time people will see Moretz differently. What comes off as an actress with wisdom beyond her age will eventually be revealed to the most affect young actress Hollywood has ever produced.
She doesn't come off as being wise beyonf her age, for that see Portman in Leon or Beautiful Girls. She comes off as acting like she thinks a super smart teen would. Her first minutes in (500) Days renders the whole film completely unwatchable.
Mar 14th 2011, 19:39
....er most affected young actress....

Definitely agree with Ellen Ripley being no.1. Even though a good character, I don't think Hermione Granger deserved such a high placement on the list, especially when you look at the rest of the top 10. I would have also liked to see Nina Sayers ranked slightly higher as well. Nice to see Clementine make the top 10. Overall, a really good list though.
Mar 15th 2011, 22:17
Whoa, wait!! Knock down Hermione, Eli, Nina and Summer down a LOT and raise Lisbeth. Why is Hermione higher than The Bride?! Otherwise, yes for Ripley. Definitely. But "Eternal Sunshine..." wasn't as great as everyone's saying...so why's Clementine so high?
Mar 18th 2011, 11:20
Seconded for Dana Scully!
Mar 18th 2011, 12:33
Charlie Baltimore from The Long Kiss Goodnight?
Mar 19th 2011, 7:10
I third for Dana Scully... Definitely.
Mar 21st 2011, 15:05
WTH! Eli isn't even female! >.<
Sie is non-gendered.
Mar 25th 2011, 11:42
LeeLoo Dallas gets a multi pass! Eh, TF, TF...
Also, I would've added them all, but thats not good, so if I had to choose between River, Zoe and Kaylee I would go with Zoe.

You left out Hayley Stark from the 2005 Hard Candy.
Nov 23rd 2011, 12:16
I can't believe Ingrid Bergman's Ilsa Lund didn't make the list.

Seriously? Seriously!?! '100 best female characters', are we gonna have a '100 best male characters' list??? Don't think so! What an incredibly narrow minded, boring, predictably clueless article. Ever thought maybe it should just be '100 best characters' ARGH

You misspelled Ridley Scott.
His character was Ripley. His name is Ridley.
How dare you.
Dec 31st 2012, 21:42
Scarlett O'Hara should be no. 2 efter Ripley, at the very least, if not no. 1.
And ahem, where the f... is Mallory Knox!?!
And I also miss Aeon Flux, Holly McClane (definitely more badass and cool than many on this list), Gareth Pierce from In The Name Of The Father and Beckinsale's Selene on here. Weird list.

And by the way, WHAT is that stupid, pitiful, awful bratty b***h Briony doing on this list? I know there are a few villains along the way, so I can understand you see greatness in the evils also, and okay, but come on - she's just a lying brat, who doesn't have a clue. There is nothing great about her whatsoever. Yuck.
May 12th 2013, 12:33
Nobody from Buffy The Vampire Slayer?
May 30th 2013, 5:57
As a popular, family-friendly list, this works decently. The problem is, when you make mention of Catherine Deneuve for her work in Belle De Jour (very low on the list, too low), then there is an expectation of some more prestigious films and roles coming at the top. Ditch the cartoon characters and put in some actually great female performances. Otherwise this list is only superficial with a couple of dips in the deep end.

Excluding Buffy from a list of Greatest Female Characters is like excluding The Beatles from a list of Greatest Bands of All Time. I actually checked the date this article was posted to make sure this wasn't some lame April Fools joke. This article is indeed incredible lame, but sadly not a joke. At least not intentionally. Buffy was iconic enough to spawn a very successful spin-off series, have her own comic book, video games, novelty action figures, fan fic novels, and magazines, have her own college courses taught around the globe and subsequently be named the world's most studied pop culture work in the history of academia, influence the creation of other strong female characters including, but not limited to, Veronica Mars, Gilmore Girls, Dead Like Me, and Joan of Arcadia and is frequently cited as NOT ONLY one of the best female characters of all time, but one of the best characters of all time! You're telling me that a character that iconic doesn't merit a spot on this list?!?!?!?! If I was the person who made this list I would be painfully embarrassed by this foolish omission, but then again, ignorance is bliss, so whoever "Simon Kinnear" is probably feeling peachy fuzzy keen right about now.
Oct 11th 2013, 0:42
What an unbelievably whitewashed list. I guess with one or two exceptions, all the great female characters were white in your opinion???
Try a little harder next time!
Oct 17th 2013, 14:55
Ugh, this article frustrated me. I think I flicked through over fifty females to get to one I believe deserved to be on this list. That being said, I haven't seen the majority of these film but found the ones you did choose were undeserving or boring except for maybe the top 10. This is the TOP 100 FEMALE CHARACTERS, not even necessarily reserved for film and yet you chose 4 animated female characters and no others? What the hell is LADY doing there over every other Disney creation? No Disney villains, animations, video game characters and minimal TV show characters if none? This is not the 100 Top Female Characters; this is "oh here's a female in a movie I've watched, let's put her in."
