“Eleven hundred men went in the water, 316 come out.” A salty seadog, half Captain Ahab, half Captain Pugwash, Robert Shaw’s shark hunter channels the spirit of Gregory Peck in Moby Dick with an added layer of crusty barnacles.
Shaw made the role his own despite hating the movie and Richard Dreyfuss. “He’d walk on to set,” recalls his co-star, “and turn into this vicious guy who tried to cut you down at the knees.”
Greatest Moment: The USS Indianapolis monologue, a speech that Shaw wrote himself.
Also See: Henry VIII (A Man For All Seasons), Lord Randolph Churchill (Young Winston), Doyle Lonnegan (The Sting).

As is Heath. I'm glad Candy was at least mentioned because it is beyond incredible, but he deserved a much higher placing, for that as well as for Brokeback and The Dark Knight.

I agree with Imaginarium about Heath Ledger's placing being too low - I reckon he should have been somewhere in the top 50. And yes, Candy is a very under-rated film. And have you noticed that the description for Alec Guiness's entry is also on the preceding page? You'll probably want to correct that.

Where is James McAvoy?!? Really, I don't get it. He was fantastic in everything he did, especially in "Atonement", which deserved a mention. It was a superb performance, praised everywhere. No James on this list can only mean you have a secret vendetta against the man - that's the only explanation. Instead you put the Heath Ledger wannabe Joseph Gordon-Levvit for a film no one saw. Pathetic.

Daniel Day Lewis' Daniel Plainview at number 3? that just made me laugh out loud. Great performance for all the wrong reasons, "I Driinnnkkkkkk yorr meelshake" hilarious, Daniel, you just won the Al Pacino award for overacting in an overrated film. See Scent of a Woman.

I believe Cruise should have been top 10, he is the greatest actor of all time, admit it. And for the "Also See" part Jerry Maguire, Tropic Thunder, Interview with the Vampire and A Few Good Men should also have been in there.

A great feature, but with some annoying errors along the way. The most glaring is that Richard Dreyfuss has the profile for Alec Guinness, but there's also a big one with the Steve Martin entry. Total Film list the character as Johnny Gray, but the lead role, unless I'm missing something, was that of Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr (the surname of whom was used as an in-joke during the Invisible Swordsman scene in Three Amigos).

To add to my earlier post, as a self-confessed grammar-Nazi, some of the shoddy work that's actually been posted in this feature is astoundingly bad. Rocky Balboa's entry in particular is littered with errors that really shouldn't happen at this level. If you're struggling for an effective proof-reader, Total Film, my services are available.

I'm glad to see John Cusack in here for Grosse Pointe Blank, not expected. I saw this in the theater when released & never looked at Cusack the same again. This film proving he can play darker roles, even though the film does have a lighter side to it almost comedic. It does have dark undertones & Cusack hits it right on the mark playing a sympathetic hitman with a heart.

Gena Rowlands performance here is flawless. I can not see anyone else playing this role. I remember watching this movie as a kid, thinking she was the toughest woman I ever seen.

I'm so happy Heathers made the list this is one of my all time favorite films. Wynona Ryder hits it right on the mark, being extreme but not over the top to make it seem cheesy. Wynona's dialogue is hysterical, her facial expressions are key, she was born to play Veronica Sawyer. Neal Damiano Film Critic

They missed a few here in what I feel should of made the list or been noted: 1 Robert Deniro - Taxi Driver 2 Jack Nicholson - Five Easy Pieces 3 Daniel Day Lewis - In the Name of the Father 4 Sally Field - Norma Rae 5 Richard Gere - An Officer & Gentleman 6 Val Kilmer - Wonderland 7 Lili Taylor - I Shot Andy Warhol but then again this list can go on they had to narrow it....

I would say this is a lot closer to a list of "Their Best Roles" as these are all great performances but not all are the greatest. Though, I always love to see respect given to Orson Wells' performance in The Third Man
