Vacuum schmacuum - when you’re blowing up a symbol of galaxy-wide imperial power in space, it needs to make a proper boom.
We've chosen the classic 'massive sparkly firework in space' version over the ostensibly more impressive CG wowser from the special edition because there's a class to it that other explosions just can't muster.

The opening of Lethal Weapon 3 The POV bomb drop in Pearl Harbor The Sum of All Fears nuke The Con Air desert airport blast Scanners may be cool/messy and The Matrix may look good, but they are not necessarily great or large scale explosions. What about the rooftop explosion from Die Hard? Or the end of Die Hard with a Vengeance? Or the fake explosion in Die Hard 4.0? Go back and try again.....

The end of watchmen has a very decent explosion!! not much flame damage though but very cool!

Commando??? Are you serious? In this scene you can actually see the dummies stuck to the poles in front of the building....its a shockingly bad explosion!
