    Heather there have been similar issues raised since the outset about Cinema Fanatic blog, the organisers were alerted early in the contest and a number of the entrants fired off emails and all getting palmed off with the same sort of reply- I think the organisers know full well what was going on - 200 votes in 1 hour yesterday! which was not unlike the 30-50 votes per day at exactly the same time and over a 10-20 minute timeframe, many of the entrants witnessed this phenomena an the likely winner was correctly predicted at day 3! but it seems little can be done about it, whole thing is a farce, and cheats will probably win

    This is such a farce and a total waste of time if one can win simply by cheating.........This whole contest is empty, meaningless. For the cheats: I hope you're totally satisfied with the outcome of this contest. You totally deserve it.........This site is meaningless to all true film lovers if it can't even moderate such a little thing as a contest for best film blog of the year. To all involved: You are rediculous and totally apathetic. I hope you all wallow and drown in this emptiness. A total farce......... ........................and a total waste of everyones time involved. P.

    How the heck can two blog’s be neck to neck (more or less) for several weeks and then on the last day of the poll one of them “non-surprisingly” jumps ahead some 200+ votes… especially when it’s a blog that has continuously been “magically” jumping past the competition with the same numbers at the same time on every occasion…? Thank you Total Film for wasting my time with your bogus competition, which has been much like watching the Bush/Gore election all over again. It’s a pity you obviously thought to little of the poll to have a serious administrator/moderator keep their eyes on it and instead chose to stand by like mindless goons cheering on the daily mainstream bollocks of the day instead. Hey, that’s just like that other blog I have heard suddenly became so popular with all you trendy hipsters! Arrivederci! Jason.

    Alright, guys. It's easy to see one blog get a bunch of votes in one day and say, "that blog is cheating." But whereas the rest of you have been asking for votes from your readers all along, I didn't ask until the day my site (NoFilmSchool) "mysteriously" jumped in the voting. It's not IP switching or anything like that. I have a large audience and when I asked them, I got a lot of votes. Simple. This is no different from what the 2nd or 3rd place blogs have been doing all along. It's funny how no one had a problem with this format until my site suddenly took first place... I think if you check the traffic stats you will see that my site is probably larger than the other sites and therefore it got more votes. Feel free to prove me wrong. But let's be clear about what kind of contest this is: a popularity one. It's not a judged contest. Total Film wants to give out awards, yes, but they also want each and every one of our sites tweeting, facebooking, and emailing the contest so that they get a lot of pageviews and name recognition as well. They're building their audience just as we are, and therefore it's a two-way street: they help us, we help them. I hope that each and every one of our blogs got exposure during the contest, regardless of there being one winner. Ask anyone in the film blogging community; I am not a cheater, I am not out to screw anyone over, but I do have a sizable audience and when I told my readers about the contest they came out in droves and voted for my site. For which I'm very thankful! Feel free to chime in with any thoughts you have on all this. Sincerely, Koo

    Just so you know Koo- some of the comments above were not aimed at you - especially ones refer to a certain bunch of 30-50 votes that would be cast at almost exactly the same time every day (for another blog in a different catagory)- and in the end started to gather an audience and a bit if a cult following- as those in the know would show up to withess the spectacle while speculating how many votes would be cast - on a day to day basis. If it happened once- it was nothing, twice a bit fishy, three days a pattern forming, then after three weeks of the same - well only those with access to the logs know what the hell was happening there. The other day all records were broken when 5 votes were coming in at a time! I know a number of entrants wrote to TF about this early in the contest, but it changed nothing.     Hi johnmoorefan- two good questions there, firstly that the up to the minute results are available to all by clicking the result link the poll- then come back in say 5 mins- refresh page and click again in 10 minutes / 1 hour or whatever- you now get a timeframe and a vote change. Unfortunately the vote-o-meter as you put it do not know who the voter is- so cannot ensure a voter is only voting once- but there are a few things that a programme can do and I am sure someone who was more technical minded could explain it better- first the site can put a cookie on the voters computer- cookies are commonplace and can be done away with a simple clear private data. The other thing is of course the poll could log "ip addresses", indeed I believe this is the case- which means that each computer that when someone votes their computer is recorded- a bit of a bummer if a family wanted to vote but only had one pc- it should be 1 vote per machine. Now concerns are raised over voting patterns- if for example someone was getting all their votes at noon each day and every day and say it was 20 votes it would raise an issue- but it is not proof of anything, but could be a pretty strong indicator, one strong enough to raise suspicions. There was something amiss with the voting in the early days- remember here we are talking about voting patterns- this is why the concerns were raised- to flag the issue to the organisers, because it is they who will have access to the data that would warrant detailed examination. People taking part would be checking regularly, maybe on the first day with the initial excitement on a regular basis- and family and friends look in- and messages get sent saying "hi, uncle dan I voted for you and you are now only 5 ahead" or whatever-. so from this kind of thing you can learn little over one day- a surge of votes on one day could suggest something innocent- for example were I to ask my work colleagues- where there is a no mobile phones rule- to vote for me and they have thiose new fangled internet ready phones- then it may be that everyone votes for me on their way out of work. once. It would be unlikely that pattern is repeated daily- and when it gets to the point where predictions of what will happen on the next day can be accurately based on what went the day before- it is the point where all concerned are clear something is amiss. In the one poll this was clear by day 5- so there was a lot of days of this pattern being repeated daily for people to be sure before saying anything. The conclusion a reasonable person would draw is that the result was of a small group, rather than an individual, voting the same time every day - that is a group for who your "vote-o-meter" doesn't work when the rest get a "sorry your vote has already been counted"., So initially alerting the organisers could have achieved a number of things- it could have resulted in a change of settings so everyone gets to vote daily, or just have informed that some who maybe by accident have found they can vote daily- i don't know much about this but my suggestion was of corporate networks- though I was since informed that these would normally only have a limited IP range allocated to them so it was unlikely. So anyhow - early in the contest the organisers were contacted and they returned a mail to say that a particular blogger would be informed- now that was fair enough, and you have to remember that the blogger themselves may be a perfectly innocent party- and it may be the work of crazed stalkerish fans - so the conclusion cannot be about who is cheating- but you can easily figure out who benefits from the cheating- that becomes clear when you look at voting patterns- we can never know who the person or persons are who cheat- the internet does afford us that degree of anonymity, even were cheating narrowed down to a single pc, there still would remain the question of who is sitting at that PC. This is why any accusations should be carefully phrased- no accusation could for sure be levelled at anyone in the contest, and more likely all the bloggers in the contest are too busy writing for the benefit of their 1000s of readers to be personally involved. If there is any issue the organisers were the only ones who could investigate and sort it out. So why should anyone care about the results? well there is a simple reason: most people are pretty sporting and enjoy a good contest, it is no shame to come 6th or 7th or 10th in such a contest, indeed then it could be stated that it would be great to have taken part with such esteemed company. But if there is a sense of cheating or the belief that there is cheating it goes against everyones sense of fair play. It also doesn't allow for the "best blog won" feeling that would allow people to talk about being on honored to be in such esteemed company. It just makes everyone feel, as was stated above, that the whole thing was a bit of a farce from the start. it is a pity.

    I'm sure no one is reading these comments anymore, but I just want to say I don't see how getting a lot of votes is "cheating" I had two site nominated in this category, Cinema Fanatic and The Poor Dancing Girl. One is my Tumblr and one is my actual site. I'm not even really sure why my Tumblr was nominated. I focused all my campaigning on Cinema Fanatic because the readership of that site comes from my followers on Tumblr, of which I have nearly 10,000. SO whenever I promoted Cinema Fanatic for this contest, it was also on my Tumblr and thus would get a bunch of votes. I also have many friends who were also promoting Cinema Fanatic because they like my work and wanted to see it rewarded. People like my work so they voted for it. It's as simple as that. All of these blogs are great and I everyone does wonderful work, but its mean-spirited to be upset over losing and claim it must have come from cheating when it simply isn't true.
