The 49 Films That Will Define 2009

Last year is so last year. Bring on the best movies of 2009...

BY Andy Lowe Dec 24th 2008 9:09AMFILED UNDER: Features

Untitled Bruno Project (Director: Unknown, ETA: 29th May)
What is it? Sascha Baron Cohen’s latest satirical shock-doc, this time in the guise of fey fashionista Bruno.
Why we’re excited: Because after the blunt disappointment of the Ali G movie, Borat was an unexpected sensation, and because the approach of Bruno has been heralded by a rippling wave of semi-scandalous news stories – Bruno at the Prop 8 rally, Bruno at the Milan fashion show – which makes us more eager than ever to see the excruciating social humiliation play out.

Drag Me To Hell (Director: Sam Raimi, ETA: 29th May)
What is it? Blood-and-guts horror about a girl hit with a curse.
Why we’re excited: Because we’re – at least temporarily – all Spidey’d out, and it’s a buzz to see Raimi heading back to his sticky horror roots. The geeky comedy presence of Justin Long and some icky rotting creature effects give out a strong whiff of Evil Dead.

Up (Directors: Pete Docter, Bob Peterson, ETA: 29th May)
What is it? Pixar’s annual raising of the animation bar, starring a septuagenarian who ties balloons to his house and flies it to South America.
Why we’re excited: It's Pixar being ambitious and brave enough to throw away the staple 'toon diet of robots and anthropomorphised animals to reach for something truly emotional and extraordinary.

Inglourious Basterds (Director: Quentin Tarantino, ETA: June)
What is it? Gritty WWII action flick about a group of Jewish-American commandos spreading fear behind enemy lines with a series of brutal killings.
Why we’re excited: The plot is inspired exploitation nonsense, the cast is gloriously eclectic (Rod Taylor and Mike Myers? Really?) and it’s a film Tarantino has been threatening to make for over ten years.

Hmmmm... I personally that Underworld 3 will be a big hit. And lets not forget winged creatures, perfect creature and skinwalkers. 2009 will be a year for horror fans to remember.

Okay this is not what I'm most excited about by a long shot but New Moon is just going to rake in the money without question. I am a Twilight saga fan admittedly, but after the superstardom Twilight launched Rob pattinson into, combined with the surge of fans to Stephanie Myer books, its already destined to be a box office best.

Terminator and Wolverine are going to be phenomonal, Transformers 2 stands a very good chance (though I agree with your CGI article that they transform too fast). I'm going to be honest, Final Destination has just been waiting for 3D tech, let the brains, blood and s**t hit the fan!

How do they plan on bringing all of these 3D cinematic experiences to the small screen, do you think? Have they thought that far ahead? Hmmm...
Also, do you think they toyed with the idea of calling Tron 2 "2Ron", before they realised it invoked images of Barker and Corbett?

You are definitely missing Coraline! I can't wait to see it, not just because I'm a huge fan of stop-motion movies, but because of the story. Who wouldn't wanna see an alternate version of their lives in a parallel universe?

I can't wait for Drag Me To Hell. Raimi going back to his horror roots. What's can be bad about that. Also The Transformers sequel is always worth a look. The new Sherlock Holmes is a film I am really looking forward to.
