Never really understood why blade runner got so much love, personally think its overrated. Empire should have been number one in my opinion, but good list anyway.

Personally I never felt the love for Empire. Blade Runner stands tall over such pap in my eyes but I guess majority rules on that. Agree though, good list. Nice way to spend 10mins "working" at least! :D

"Predator" wasn't THAT good...and "Avatar" at #11? Really? It's a "one-watch" film...I don't get it :/

Avatar at no. 11! Really? Si-fi is not about what the best effects are at the moment. Will Avatar be in this list in 10 years? I doubt it.

Who in their right mind actually believes The Andromida Strain, The Return of the Jedi and the wrath of Kahn are not worthy of this list? I think there are a lot of people out there who need to spend less time watch FRACKING AVATAR and experience some real quality!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The problem is that they only asked for our favourite film. Just the one. Therefore, I'm guessing that only about 10 films on this list got a large number of votes. The rest will only have received a handful. Return Of The Jedi is infinitely better than some of these films, but it's never going to get the Star Wars vote ahead of the other two.

HAHA Solaris ahead of Akira, Total recall, district 9 and Moon? Who needs action and story when you have 3 SLOW hours of prentious navel-gazing ? And who keeps voting for Barbarella? Its a rubbish dated pantomime..stop it!

I have to honestly say this list is horrible. Some of these movies shouldn't be in the Top 100 sci-fi movies of all time. It's so PC to say some of these movies are great when they really aren't: Barbarella? Really? Come on people. Almost all the Star Wars movies could be on the list excluding one or two. Star Trek II? I like Bladerunner but #1? Maybe 25th is more like it. Come on Primer? Flash Gordon? I still think District 9 is so overrated it's not even funny. What about Battle: LA it was a cool film. I enjoyed it more then Independence Day. Though both probably aren’t good enough for the Top 50.

When was this poll? I missed it. Like my vote would've mattered, I don't think many people care for Revenge of the Sith. That saddens me.

Avatar beats The Thing and Moon?! Actually lets rephrase, Avatar is at number 11?! I guess people love to be spoon fed c**p. Pleasantly surprised to see Primer get in the list. Robocop better than Akira? This should be a comedy list. Glad that none of the shocking last Star Wars movies made it in but they were a little better than some of the c**p here. Bladerunner at no.1 doesn't bother me. Can't say I've seen a film like it since, not with that production scale. Too hard to judge what should've been no. 1 but I am relieved that it's not Space Odyssey or Star Wars for a change.

The love for Avatar is tiresome and ridiculous. It's a basic concept stretched out over a billion hours. TRON: Legacy has better CGI than Avatar and even has better acting (with the s**t script) than Sam "Can't-Keep-An-Accent" Worthington. Everyone thinks he created this whole new world even though the Final Fantasy games (mainly VII and VIII) made new worlds every single game with p**s poor technology and no voice acting and still made it one of the greatest worlds of all time. They're truly creative, he isn't. I mean, he named a new element which can be used for fuel "Unobtainium". REALLY!? That's stuff poorly scripted BBC/ITV dramas like Primal create.

The thing I hate about most of these movie lists is that no love is shown for older films. My list of films that would be in my Top 50, but weren't included here: 1) The Thing from Another World (1951) 2) Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan 3) Them! (1953) 4) Alphaville 5) Things to Come 6) Quatermass 2 7) War of the Worlds (1953) 8) Gattaca 9) Brother from Another Planet 10) Silent Running 11) The Hidden 12) The Andromeda Strain (1971) 13) Ghost in the Shell 14) Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence 15) Pitch Black 16) Wings of Honneamaise 17) The Time Machine (1960) 18) 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954) 19) They Live 20) Invasion of the Body s****hers (1956)

I loved Blade Runner as a film but Vangelis's music I found to be totally intrusive and not it just did not fit with what was happening on the screen. Forbidden Planet remains my favourite SF movie to this day.

That Metropolis is not in the top 10 is bad enough. That it is (Metropolis) more than 10 places below Avatar is unforgivable. E.T no.4!? Schmaltzy nonsense. A Clockwork Orange: The Movie is a pale imitation of the novel, that being said so is Jurassic Park. This list may please anybody still in their teens but to anybody over it reads like a car crash of fickle minds.

Are you kidding me...JJAbrams Star Trek makes the list and not Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan!!! "He tasks me...he tasks me. And I shall have him. I'll chase him round the moons of Nibea, and round the Antarees Maelstrom, and round Perditions flames before I give him up!" Fake chest or not, old Ricardo's Khan would have eaten Eric Bana's Nero's lunch, and could have given him some choice lines to spare (because he had none of his own!). And Bill Shatner would have "Shatnered" all over the young Mr. Pine! I hate pandering to the younger generation!

I'm in complete solidarity with the commenters on this list. Avatar is too high, Blade Runner is not better than Empire Strikes Back, and I think most intelligent people would recognize Planet of the Apes is better than the Matrix. But otherwise a solid list.

These top lists are always subjective. Me? Empire Strikes Back will always be #1. And while Avatar was good, it was not great - certainly not as high as it is on this list. Still, if you want a different opinion on top sci fi movies, I suggest http://www.filmcrave.com/list_genre_movie.php?genre=Sci-Fi

I totally agree with Mr. higgins78. Metropolis by Fritz Lang was THE FIRST one in this particular genre and it definitely deserves more attention!! I just recently found out that 1984 Giorgio Moroder's remake of Metropolis is gonna be streaming online at metropolismovie.co.uk pretty soon and I think its a great opportunity for those sci-fi movie lovers, who hasnt seen it yet!!!

i was so excited to find this article...then i saw that you had omitted 'children of men', a film which is better than 40 of the films you have selected, and i realized your entire article becomes obsolete and i cannot really trust your decisions. i know i'm only one reader, so you probably won't even really care. but you lost any credibility whatsoever by not including that film. i would certainly like to hear any explanation for this decision. i've thought in depth with an open mind how you could justify something like the new 'star trek' or even 'independence day', but i got no idea at all.
