The 50 Greatest Simpsons Movie References

Smart and funny riffs on classic cinema moments...

30. Batman (1989)

Episode: Last Exit To Springfield (Season 4)

The original moment: The camp, gothic-horror reaction of villain Jack Napier to his new face, following a dunk in caustic acid and plastic surgery. He grabs the surgeon’s mirror and laughs, manically, as he sees The Joker for the first time…

The Simpsons moment: With union negotiations leaving the Simpsons without dental insurance, Lisa has a set of cheap and monstrous braces fitted, reacting to her new smile just like Tim Burton’s comic book nasty.

29. Apocalypse Now (1979)

Episode: Lisa The Beauty Queen (Season 4)

The original moment: GIs in Vietnam are treated to a show from a group of Playboy bunnies, but the lusty grunts turn the spotlight event into a riot and the girls are air-lifted to safety.

The Simpsons moment: Guest-starring Bob Hope presents Lisa – reigning Miss Springfield – to a group of soldiers at Fort Springfield. Expecting a full-grown beauty queen, they revolt (‘First Tony Randall cancels, now this!’) and Bob and Lisa escape in a chopper.

28. Goodfellas (1990)

Episode: Bart The Murderer (Season 3)

The original moment: ‘As far back as I can remember I always wanted to be a gangster.’ Scorsese’s teenage Henry Hill shows his flash new suit to his disapproving Ma.

The Simpsons moment: Having fallen in with the local mafia following a baseball accident, Bart starts earning money as their bartender, and buys a suit just like Henry. The ep also has references to The Godfather, The French Connection and The St Valentine’s Day Massacre.

Are all the movie references you've highlighted from the first 11 seasons and the movie because that's all that has been released on dvd so far? And *someone* in Total Film has been watching them too much? Maybe *everyone* in Total Film? :-P

Well the first one's from Season 14 but I assume they are mostly from the first few seasons since they were cr*p after season 8

Missed my favorite...though probably because it's not at all visual: In the episode where they vacation in Japan, Marge says "We saw that movie 'Rashomon', you liked that.", to which Homer replies "That's not the way I remember it."

Are you kidding me? You expect me to click through 18 pages? No thanks. Next time, cut down on the click throughs. Buried on digg.

Great number one choice. Although I must say that the Terminator one should be omitted in favour of the far greater T-2 homage in the one episode when Homer befriends Flanders. Walking through the hedge like the T-1000 through the prison bars and then chasing the car with the golf clubs? Priceless.

Cookie jar? Um, isn't that Homer's penny jar? No doubt about it though; this is hands-down the number one. Top stuff guys.

Notice how most of the clever, inventive references are all from the early seasons? What does that tell you about the quality of the show later on...

@mattburgess, they've probably only highlighted the first 11 seasons because up until a revival of quality in this last season, 1-10 are the only good ones.
