Rubber isn’t your everyday run of the mill movie. Set around the premise that an inanimate tyre can suddenly become, well, animate – and not only animate, but also murderous – it’s the kind of movie that belongs in a '70s Grindhouse cinema.
But then, Rubber’s director Quentin Dupieux isn’t your everyday run of the mill director. For a start, he’s better known under his pseudonym Mr Oizo.
Born in France in 1974, Dupieux became better known under his pseudonym Mr Oizo (a corruption of the friend word oiseau, meaning ‘bird’) after he hit the music circuit with his lauded electro house compositions.
He really hit the big time in 1999 with ‘Flat Beat’, a track with a looped bass that Oizo dreamed up in two hours during a lazy Sunday afternoon. The song became a massive hit, and was used during a Levi’s ad campaign, which Oizo directed and starred yellow puppet Flat Eric.
