The Story Behind The Human Centipede

A new breed of body horror

“I saw a child molester on television and I said, ‘They should stitch this guy with his mouth to the ass of a very fat truck driver. It would be a really good punishment for him.’ Then I thought, ‘That’s a cool idea for a film.’”

Director Tom Six there, explaining the origin of his new, demented body horror flick The Human Centipede (First Sequence).

Taking that dark, off-the-cuff joke, Six – whose previous credits include little-known films Gay and Honeyz - decided to apply it to an icky, squirm-inducing horror movie.

The premise? Three backpackers in Europe are royally stitched up by a nutso surgeon who wants to create – yup – his very own human creepy crawly.

It could be the most shocking body horror to come out this side of Martyrs and Antichrist, with its ‘David Cronenberg on acid’ trappings. As one US critic noted, it’s the film “that you can’t unsee”.

Here’s how it got made…

The thing is 'The Human Centipede' isn't shocking, it's actually just a very boring film, not to mention absolutely rubbish. And the critic who compared it to Martyrs and Antichrist is in the wrong profession.

Being from the Netherlands I can tell you that Six directed hands down the worst movie I've ever seen: 'I Love Dries'. His other movies 'Gay' and 'Honeyz' aren't very good either, but are masterpieces compared to 'I Love Dries'. He really is not a well know or respected director here in The Netherlands...

Vespertine is correct. The only thing shocking or disturbing about this movie is the idea of it. The film itself is niether shocking or disturbing...or any good really. The first half is far superior to the second half, and the second half is where all the human centipede stuff comes in. And I highly doubt most of the critics who are ripping it even saw it. One critic in the US stated it had "gobstopping amounts of gore", when in fact there is pretty much no gore what so ever. Great idea. Horrid execution.
