As they did for No Country For Old Men, the Coens filmed True Grit in the Lone Star State, with the tiny town of Granger doubling for 1800’s boomtown Fort Smith.
“We chose Granger because its appearance is close to that of a turn-of-the-century town that matched the reference photos we have for Fort Smith, Arkansas,” explained Paramount’s location manager Robbie Friedmann. Meanwhile, the locals were busy getting themselves in a lather over the arrival of some Hollywood “talent” in town.
“Matt Damon’s a hunk,” one resident told the Texarkana Gazette. “It’s causing excitement among the ladies. They’re getting their cameras ready. We’ve been told there’s no guarantee that we can get close to the actors. But I’ll bring my binoculars.”
From the looks of the trailer the cinematography looks suitably spectacular, with the desolation of the Texas landscape lending itself nicely to Mattie’s newfound loneliness. In fact, the trailer has got us pretty excited full stop…
