Excitingly, the Coens have called upon The Dude himself to recreate some of that old Lebowski magic in the role of Cogburn. And according to Bridges, the lure of another collaboration with Joel and Ethan was just too much to resist.
“It's really terrific to be working with the Coen brothers again,” he told Rotten Tomatoes. “They're masters. They make it look so easy. They're doing a Western, which is something they've never done before, and I love making Westerns.”
However, despite being something of a student of the genre, Bridges claims he won’t be looking to John Wayne’s portrayal of the character for inspiration.
“The brothers are basing their script on the novel by Charles Portis,” explains Bridges. “I don't think they're really considering it a remake of that film, but rather a remake of that book. So I'm looking at the book and the character who's written in the book. I admire John Wayne, I think he's a wonderful actor, but I'm not going to reference him, really. I'm just going to do the book.”
It’s a top bit of casting as far as we’re concerned, and if Bridges can transport some of Bad Blake’s shaggy, boozey charm from guitar-plucking to gun-slinging, the film will be off to a good start. However, Bridges isn’t the only A-lister preparing to saddle-up…
