Cogburn isn’t the only man with an eye on bringing those murdering varmints to justice. Texas Ranger La Bouef is also on the scene to lend a hand, with none other than Matt Damon stepping into Glen Campbell’s shoes as the moustachioed lawman. And like Bridges, Damon is quick to enthuse over the brothers Coen.
“It’s a really great script,” says Damon. “They adapted it from the book and the book is amazing. I'd never read it, but it's worth the read. I love Westerns, but I really love the Coen brothers.”
With the star harbouring his own plans to go into directing one day, the shoot was the perfect opportunity to pick up some tips and tricks from the best.
“If I can figure out a project, yes, I’m dying to (direct), ” he said to Collider. “But I keep getting these jobs with these directors and I don’t feel like I’m putting off my directing career by going to work with the Coen brothers. On the contrary, I feel like I’m going to learn so much watching them that I guess I’ll put off directing for another year and watch these guys do it.”
Meanwhile, Damon has gone the distance to make sure his cowboy appearance is truly authentic by growing his own moustache. “I didn't know I could grow one," he says. "(My wife) Lucy went online and saw it and said, "What the fuck is that thing on his lip? I’m going into porn, finally!”
So with Matt and Jeff on board as the good guys, all we need now is a villain…
