True Grit is a good old-fashioned revenge yarn, focusing on precocious youngster Mattie Ross in her attempts to claim retribution after her father is murdered by outlaws.

Trouble is, as a teenage girl she doesn’t stand much of a chance against the grizzled gunslingers who did for her pa. Not to be denied she seeks out legendary former marshal Reuben J. Cogburn, a surly drunkard granted, but one who knows his way around a pistol.

The Coens have certainly played-up the revenge angle in the film’s promotional material, with a pleasingly retro teaser poster taking the form of a traditional Wanted sign, complete with a solitary, blood-letting bullet-hole. In case anyone was still confused as to what it’s all about, the poster helpfully spells out “Retribution” in nice clear letters at the bottom.

So how will the Coens be making this version different from the original then? Well apparently, they’ll be keeping an eye on the book at all times…
