Sob Story: Orphaned siblings Seita and Setsuko roam the ravaged landscapes of Japan during WWII, struggling for food and shelter in the face of callous adults.
Most Likely To Get Something In Their Eye:Anybody with a shred of compassion. Grave Of The Fireflies, along with fellow kids-during-war flicks Empire Of The Sun and Come And See, doesn't stint on exposing the horrors of children having to fend for themselves.
But the real clincher is that Isao Takahata's film is animated. The juxtaposition of the iconic, charming Studio Ghibli style with the stark subject matter makes for desperately tragic, timeless tearjerker.
Keep The Hankies Handy:Seito returns home to find Setsuko so malnourished she's hallucinating and eating marbles. She's not the only one who'll choke.
