Describes process of choosing which version of character to adapt
Star signs on for Skull Island
"Some people call me a terrorist, I consider myself a teacher."
Nemesis: Iron Man
Who? The inscrutable figurehead of a global terrorist group with a fondness for all things chintzy and Chinese, The Mandarin isn't one to take Tony Stark's arrogant posturing lightly.
Terrifying or terrible? There's a lesson here: Never threaten a man with an unending supply of expendable minions with explosives.

Apart from the top 3 that I totally agree with, this list was all over the place! Red Mist ahead of Bane and Zod! Seriously?

Is it really just me? I mean LOKI? I really enjoyed both "Thor" and "The Avengers", but I never really got a good fright from this guy. H's sort of crazy and has the good-old wish for power and ruling. He makes a fair villain, but as far as a top-list, he wouldn't make it among my top ten.
Apr 24th 2013, 11:58
Colin Farrell at least had the acting chops to pull off a tongue-in-cheek performance. How can you put him below Vinnie Jones and Arnie as Mr Freeze? They didn't know what the hell they were doing.
Apr 24th 2013, 12:20
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance: Erm, that's the wrong picture.
Apr 24th 2013, 12:31
Peter Fonda was definitely the better Devil than the other guy who played in the second Ghost Rider..and Loki surely must have done some toying to get to the second spot :)

Why does the comment system on here not recognise when you start a new line?
Apr 24th 2013, 13:33
Apr 24th 2013, 14:15
^ Voldemort* and "Harry Potter" is not a series of comic book films...
Apr 24th 2013, 15:35
So Dr.Doom was a better villain in the movies than iron monger? If you say so.
Apr 24th 2013, 15:37
Plus am I the only one who really liked Willem Dafoe in Spider Man.
Apr 24th 2013, 15:48
I'm in love with Loki guys did you see the thor 2 teaser? WOW
Apr 24th 2013, 16:38
Umm, can I just say how anyone who places Poison Ivy above Mr. Freeze is just kind of... wrong? I'm sorry, but her overwhelmingly campy performance is a LOT worse than Arnie's punning. Arnie actually had some moments of genuine acting (yeah, people like to forget that), but Uma was just annoying. Same with Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman.
Apr 24th 2013, 16:42
Also- Obadiah Stane at number 40?! COME ON! Tony Stark could make a better list than this... IN A CAVE! WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS!
He deserves a higher spot for that line alone.
Apr 24th 2013, 16:44
Wow, I usually really enjoy Total Films lists. I know this is all opinionated but this list was just all wrong and all over the place.
Apr 24th 2013, 18:22
I'm sorry, but Loki does not deserve the #2 spot. He's a good villain don't get me wrong, but I would in no way call him terrifying.
Apr 24th 2013, 19:14
Totally agree with the top 3!
Apr 24th 2013, 20:40
ALSO- Whiplash over Obadiah Stane AND Colonel Stryker?! Why?!
Apr 24th 2013, 20:43
On the other hand, your top 10 (with the exception of Catowman- and possibly Mandarin, I haven't seen the movie yet) are pretty solid.
Apr 24th 2013, 20:45
This article lost all its credibility at number 50. Farrell's hammy Bullseye was the bee's knees in Daredevil. No Nuclear Man? Yeah, well done. A poor, poor list and more factual inaccuracies than I can be bothered to count.
Apr 24th 2013, 20:52
Also, the quote for Loki... "I am Loki, of Asgard, and I am burdened with glorious purpose". Nothing else comes close.
Apr 24th 2013, 21:54
Magneto >>>>>> abyss >>>>>>>>>> Loki
Apr 24th 2013, 23:06
@Chufferstud - "Red Mist ahead of Bane and Zod!"... I don't know if your list is different from mine, but Bane is at #6 and Zod is at #4, while Red Mist is down at #19.
Apr 25th 2013, 1:06
LOKI,, Terrifying??? Did I watch the wrong Avengers movie or something?? An alright yet campy villain I suppose but I nearly thought the purpose of Loki's character in The Avengers was for comic relief,, to have him right up there at number 2 next to The Joker is ridiculous.
Apr 25th 2013, 5:28
@DravenCage somewhere between my first comment and yours they changed it around! Cheeky b*****ds!
Apr 25th 2013, 19:51
The Mandarin? Anyone who's seen the film knows that's a stupid position to place him. Glad Sebastian Shaw hasn't been forgotten though.
Apr 26th 2013, 6:20
Apr 26th 2013, 15:46
Are you kidding me? The Riddler at no.35? Jim Carrey was totally too weird to play that role and he just looks so dumb. That film sucked anyway.
Apr 26th 2013, 15:50
And anyway, the Riddler above Green Goblin? I didn't like how goofy the Green Goblin was, but if he goes on a list like this, at least put him above the really stupid Riddler.
Apr 26th 2013, 16:13
I have to admit, I did like Sebastian Shaw. He was a creepy yet interesting villain. Although, he was the only good villain, I didn't like any of the others. That doesn't include Erik after he turns evil.
Apr 28th 2013, 9:48
The Mandarin in Iron Man 3 is atrocious, they completely ruined the character with a weak twist that was done better by Nolan's Batman.
Apr 28th 2013, 10:51
i think this list is not so much about the villains being terrifying, but more for being GOOD villains and how WELL they're being portrayed on screen. overall, how MEMORABLE they are as comic book villains on the big screen.
if this is the case..yeah, most of the ones on this list deserve their spots. even arnie's dr. freeze..as horribly campy as it is, it IS memorable. you only WISH you can ERASE it from your memory, but (sadly) couldn't.
and Vinnie Jones's Juggernaut..i like it. it serves its purpose in the film. and briefly, his muscle suit looks convincing enough. and his chase scene with Ellen Page's Kitty...dare i say it? CLASSIC.
my personal top 5 would be: Tom Hiddleston (in both Thor and The Avengers), Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight), Ian McKellen (the X-Men trilogy), Mickey Rourke (Iron Man 2) and Danie Craig (The Road to Perdition).
regarding the last two (on MY list)..Rourke's big entrance and showdown with Downey's Stark at the car race track remains one of the most memorable comic book movie scenes EVER. and, in his too few scenes, he comes off WAY more menacing that Ledger's Joker.
and the PRE-Bond Craig baddie, opposite Tom Hanks's protagonist, is just chilling. and, to me, more memorable and enjoyable than Jude Law's psycho hit man character, in the same movie.
Apr 28th 2013, 15:55
The top 3: 100% true.
Now, in the Top ten I think needs some changes...
Apr 30th 2013, 7:38
No no no no NO, Marvel villains are aimed at kids and Spiderman 2 was bloody terrible, nope awful and false list. By the way Loki was about as frightening as a puppy in Yoda's pyjamas.
May 1st 2013, 17:41
Me encanta este personaje es inteligente, loco, intrigante siempre crees que se va arrepentir ...pero no lo hace y eso lo hace peligroso
May 1st 2013, 17:45
me referia a loki
May 18th 2013, 15:09
Erm.... S.H.R.E.D.D.E.R. ???????
Sep 12th 2013, 16:28
OK.......I saw #1 coming, but isn't is disrespectful not having JACK NICHOLSON's JOKER there, as he was an influence on Ledgars portrayal? I mean, it doesn't matter who you prefer but he made the Joker-to put it blunt-darker for a mainstream audience at the time. Ledgars portrayal wouldn't even be on the cutting room floor if it wasn't for Nicholson. Also, most of this list is a mess with a predictable top 10. The abomination was ok, Emma Frost was good, kingpin was the best part of daredevil, and I couldn't understand a word of Banes. Very disappointing list.
Nov 2nd 2013, 12:55
i think green goblin is better than riddler
Nov 2nd 2013, 12:57
scarecrow 18 and magneto 3 whata hell
Dec 1st 2013, 8:19
i think magneto is too high
Dec 1st 2013, 8:21
ozymandias better than scarecrow
Mar 30th 2014, 19:45
By putting Colin Farrell in the top of the worst list, you lost all credibility for me.
