You have Prometheus on this list under "why its great". Any credibility this list might have had is destroyed right there.

Zulu Dawn charts the Battle of Isandlwana; Rourke's Drift is Zulu. Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Casino Royale and Batman Begins are reboots, not prequels. You could've done Battle or Conquest from the Apes series instead of Rise, and Star Trek because they're actual prequel-sequels, not reboots. Berks.

Not sure The Thing deserves to be that low down the list. It wasn't great and the bad CGI is unforgivable, but credit where it's due, at least the director tried to keep the same level of suspense and creepy atmosphere throughout (well until the last 20 mins when it all goes to sh!t). Better than most of the cr4p above it I think.

I see Total Film are still desperately trying to push Prometheus after the f**k up of your 4/5 review. The film's s**t - a total mess - deal with it.

Ok now I'm confused. Last week The Phantom Menace appeared on a list here as one of the best origin stories, and now it's branded as one of the worst prequels. SO WHICH IS IT!?

Strange that you praise (to a degree) Prometheus and condemn Zombie's Halloween, yet to my mind both films made exactly the same mistake, exchanging mystery for very dull, predictable explanations.

I've laid off Prometheus, but if TF will keep insisting it's good I can't keep quiet any longer. Yes it looks pretty and the production design was impressive. So that makes a good film now does it? The script was a mess and I actually found it insulting. Oh, but it covered 'big themes'. Balls. I left the cinema in an incandescent fury. I would genuinely, all joking apart, prefer to tongue out a dogs hoop rather than watch it again.

Salma Hayek was NOT in From Dusk Till Dawn 3! Red Dragon? Very weak film who couldn't compare with Manhunter and I hated Anthony Hopkins' performance in this. It was filmed only a year after Hannibal and he looks ten years older. And his Lecter is now only a pantomime villain, Hopkins tries too much to recapture the magic of Silence of the Lambs but it doesn't work : the strenghth of his performance in Silence of the Lambs is that he's rarely seen, he really was a supporting character... even with a Best Actor Oscar... Worst tendency in prequels like Texas Chainsaw : The Beginning, Rob Zombie's Halloween (which I really liked though) is explaining why the boogeymen became boogeymen. Boogeymen are scary because they're shrouded in mystery, they're evil for no particular reason, there's an anarchy in their behavior and that makes them scary. So when they explain to us that Leatherface kills people because the mean kids used to make fun of him in elementary school... it just doesn't work! Anybody else realize that the Star Wars prequels just kill the mystery of The Empire Strikes Back? The greatest scene and biggest spoiler of all time comes when Darth Vader tells Luke he's his old man. So now we have a generation of kids who watch the Star Wars films starting with Episode 1, then 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. So I guess that when they finally arrive at the climax of Empire, they must say to themselves "well duh, of course you're his father, we've known that since forever". A good prequel shouldn't ruin the surprises of the original films. Also : Amityville 2 : GUILTY PLEASURE!!!!

I disagree with large swathes of this list anyhow, but I do have to commend TF on its consistency in brown-nosing Chris Nolan at any opportunity, and trying to pretend Prometheus was a great film. Batman Begins was a reboot - for f**k's sake it takes place in the same narrative timeframe (Year One) as Burton's original Batman film so what exactly is it meant to be a prequel to? And Prometheus was scuppered by Lindelhof's inablity to tell a story from beginning to end and no amount of prettiness can make up for its glaring flaws.

Zombie's Halloween wasn't really a prequel so much as a remake.

Star Trek (2009) is a prequel, as they tie it in to the existing canon with old Spock. Yet it is missing from this list. Whereas Batman Begins is a complete re-telling, so is not a prequel at all. Prometheus was pretty poor. It made no sense. Watch the Honest Trailer on youtube, which highlights most of the film's glaring flaws, such as why did the aliens leave primitive human directions to their weapons facility? Why is the geologist so terrified of an ancient alien skeleton, then so in love with an obviously dangerous alien serpent? How come stoner scientis Sean Harris has mapping technology, GPS, digital mapping equipment, and then gets lost? How come Noomi Rapace can perform a dangerous C-section on herself, which hurts her when walking, yet moments later she can absail without any pain whatsoever? Why did it matter that Vickers was Weyland's daughter? etc... The Honest Trailer sums it up better. The Star Wars prequels are always divisive. I prefer Episode 1 over Episode 3, just because Episode 1 used some actual location work and wasn't all CGI green screen backgrounds that look terrible and flat and blurry and burn the retinas.

"if the first Van Wilder was set in 2002, surely this prequel should be in the '90s? That makes the presence of mobile phones very confusing." There were mobile phones in the 90s and the brick mobile phone in the 80s, if you remember.
