John Ford believed in the old newspaperman's maxim, "if the legend is more interesting than the truth, then print the legend." The first of his three cavalry movies pits Henry Fonda's stiff-necked martinet Colonel Thursday against John Wayne's pragmatic Captain York at a god-forsaken outpost in Apache territory, with every scene framed like an idealised painting of the old West. Unfortunately, Ford's fondness for knockabout Oirish comedy and coy, old-fashioned romance (enter Shirley Temple) postpones the action until the last reel.
