Nic Cage

Seeing Silly's post offering some Nic Cage love has prompted me to start this thread to ask the question, 'Why?'

I hate Nic Cage's performances. Always have. Even Raising Arizona couldn't instil me with Cage love. Part of it might be the debris left behind by Peggy Sue got Married, but to this day I have never understood why this man is a huge star. Where's his charisma? Where's his acting chops (and please don't just churn out the old chestnut of Leaving Las Vegas), where are his looks? His hair? His voice is in general a drunken slur, and I'm forever willing the man to properly open his damn eyes. There is nothing about this guy I can stand, and will avoid his films like the plague, even when they're supposedly worth watching.

Anyone willing to try and convert me?

MrSilly 19-05-2010 10:25 AM

Don't think I could ever convert you. Cage pretty much appeals to the masochist in me. Dude's a train wreck, but such a compelling one. You watch Face/Off, it's like he's attempting to outdo himself in the idiot stakes. Then you get the rest of the clag he appears in, and I can't help but laugh just thinking of it.

I couldn't ever call him a great or even good actor, but he is fantastically entertaining. I go to him for comedy more than anything else. Sometimes it ends surprising me, like with Bad Lieutenant, once in a blue moon the shocking awfulness somehow rises above, and turns into a bafflingly watchable film.

He's not good though. Just weird.

So if someone like you, who actually enjoys watching Cage, admits that he's not good, why do so many directors (some who are well respected) want to work with the man?

MrSilly 19-05-2010 10:52 AM

Because he's a star name and can hopefully provide at least some form of box office success? But then, that doesn't really count for the well-respected directors, who you'd expect to not worry about such a thing. Maybe he's a smooth talker?

I used to like nic cage. The rock face off etc. I enjoyed him in kick ass. But his head is so far up his arse it's not even funny.

That would explain the state of his hair then.

I think it's not Cage himself that people go to see necessarily but the type of films he ends up being cast in. He is mainly a genre movie star (I'm not going to call him an actor even if he has an Oscar) and while he's obviously got fans I think most people check out his films because they look like explosive dumb fun or find the premise of them interesting. That they happen to have him in them is neither here nor there. That's what I'd like to think anyway. Or maybe it's just to laugh at his hair, which in The Sorcerer's Apprentice is looking utterly ludicrous.
He's in a similar position on the movie star scale to say, Mel Gibson before he got so crinkly and crazy. Although Mel was at least good looking - once upon a time. Cage has never been.

100% agree with you.
I thought Mel was a better actor than Cage and had better hair.
