Kinect

Whats your thoughts on the new Kinect device?
I for one have pre-ordered the device even though it was more expensive than i thought it would be, it does look fun and if its anything like the exhibition/demos make out it to be- we 360 players are on for a winner!:D

You do know that Kinetic is a fucking joke? Even Microsoft are (secretly) ashamed of how it turned out, do yourself a massive favour and cancel your pre-order, either that or make sure when you play it you dont have anything other than a totally bare floor and a bare wall, otherwise the daft camera will get you all mixed up and turn you into a mish-mash of human and furniture.

Do you own a ps3? seems like your anti microsoft?? either way i think i'll keep my pre order intact and see how this thing turns out, i too have my doubts but looking at all the demo's and exhibitions so far theres not been much negative feedback from Kinect.
I think the xbox has come up with a more unique accessory than what playstation has has with the move /wii style controllers, but i cant really judge until i've played any of the games, i myself have had the ps3 and xbox consoles and you cant really say ones better than the other as most of the games are released on both systems. Thanks for your views on the matter though.

lol, my views were a tad caustic, I just dont like to see people wasting their money. I am the OMNI-CONSUMER looking out for others consumer needs!!!

Frankly, a stupid and ridiculous comment.

According to you. A person has every right to pan something, whether it's a device, film, game or whatever. You don't have to agree, but respect their opinion please.

I'm a huge gamer... but it's got spectacular fail written all over it, I'm afraid....

Did you know two people playing Kinect need to stand 8 feet from the camera? Did you know Kinect needs to be placed 2-6 feet high to work? Did you know that you don’t need a Kinect power pack if you own a 360 Slim?

You do now.

VG247 has received photographs of the entire Kinect manual, revealing final, consumer-facing information on setting up and using the motion camera.

The required play distances are confirmed in the document: “The sensor can see you when you are approximately 6 feet (2 meters) from the sensor. For two people, you should play approximately 8 feet (2.5 meters) from the sensor.”

The manual also provides height information for placing: “For the best play space and sensor performance, place your sensor between 2 and 6 feet (0.6 and 2 meters) high, the closer to the low or high limit the better.”

You’re also warned that you should “not put the sensor on your console.”

The peripheral’s manual confirms that an external power pack needs to be used unless you own a Slim.

“For Xbox 360 S consoles, power is supplied by the console. For original Xbox 360 consoles, you’ll need to connect the sensor to a standard wall outlet.”

If you own a Slim, the camera’s simply plugged into the AUX input.

Kinect comes with a software disc which needs to be installed for it to work. We’re going to assume this is included in the upcoming 360 dashboard update.

“Troubleshooting”

There’s a troubleshooting section at the back of the manual, which tells you how to fix stuff if it all goes wrong.

If the camera can’t see you, you should “turn on lights to brighten the play space,” “try wearing different colored clothing that contrasts with the background of your play space,” and “prevent lights, including sunlight, from shining directly on the sensor.”

You’re also warned to make sure the system is “well-ventilated.”

Check out the images below. There’s a page missing here which detailed how to install the software; the photo was really blurred.

Kinect launches in the US on November 4 and the UK on November 10.
It sounds far too fussy and complicated to the average user, hell, it sounds like that to me!
It's a beta test kit they are selling to the consumer to test.
I give it a year tops before they quietly forget all about it or atleast give us something worth having.

only time will tell....

Thanks Punchbowl - some good information there, i think it is going to be a only time will tell product, i myself have my doubts after buying the original camera for the 360 which was a waste of time and money for the few games that you actually used the device on. Yes the Kinect is expensive and will be confusing to some when setting it up correctly, but i dont think we can call it a joke just yet! it'll be interesting to see how the adventure and fighting games will pan out. Could be the Atari Jaguar and fall on its arse or it could be new ipod and be very successful.

Wy should i respect this opinion? I wasnt meaning to sound insensitive but his comment is ridiculous. He is making sweeping generalisations on a gaming product thats not out yet and im guessing he has not experienced first hand.

I have experienced it, iv used it and im impressed by the tech.

If we were just to pan everything the way he did then this forum would just look like a youtube comments board full of fanboys.

Im off to my gaming forum to talk about gaming now.:D

No problem... in the interest of fairness, though. It has been pointed out thaty a lot of these manuals will say all sorts to cover the developers back... and who actually reads them anyway. The 'Change of Clothes' thing seems slightly worrisome.

And it won't be the new iPod.:)
