This is England 88

I have watched the first two episodes and I think it it pretty dull to be honest and I think Meadows has got his fashion of the time completely wrong. I can't speak for what was being worn up North but down south I can't remember anyone still wearing skinhead or Mod fashion in 1988, I think he is just trying to milk the original film.

I will wait to watch it on the computer as its not had very good reviews elsewhere either.

I did enjoy the original film, it could have been a parody of American History X.

TIE86 was a bit slow in bits too but being of that age I could relate to certain aspects of it.

I don't think it's got the legs to work in 88 though, but I'll watch it all before casting my judgement.

I didn't even know it was on. What channel is it on and when? Is it showing on any of the catch up services like iPlayer or on demand?

Much thanks. I'll watch tomorrow, fella:confused:.

Jesus. I've just finished watching it. I thought it was awesome! I liked the original film but, if I'm honest, found it an uncomfortable watch; and with 86, it was nice to catch up with all the characters an' all; but this one... in this one, the acting is stunning! I'll be looking forward to hearing what you think, Jeff...

I watched the first part yesterday. So far I'm liking how the focus is on the more interesting characters and the less substantial ones seem to be getting less of a look in. I'll try to watch the rest today.

Great performance from Joseph Gilgun (Woody) in the final part when he confronts them all in the street.

I think the fashions was pretty authentic for the period. You have to take into account the backgorunds of the characters. It would make them appearpretty shallow if they had lost their identity with the skinhead scene after only a few years.

Up North was probably still more inclined towards mod fashion than the south in the late 80s...even throughout the 90's it was still strong. Oasis and the Northern music scene were heavily influenced by mod culture.

I believe Channel 4 have already signed up Meadows for a 'This is England 90' series to follow next year.

In fairness, the fashion they are wearing is hardly the most important aspect of the series. I'd say that the cracking performances from all of the actors involved, the brilliant writing and the excellent direction are all more important.

I think the fashion is and should be a big aspect, if you are going to set your film or TV series in a certain time then you should get the fashion of that time correct. As I was the same age as those portrayed at that time I was paying close attention to the fashion. Meadows has just lazily left them all stuck in the skinhead era which had finished well before the last series was set. 1988 was mostly casuals and the start of the the acid house scene.
