Help with Film Studies

Bare sets

hi all. I'm new to the forum and looking for help with my independent research/dissertation.

I'm after films that - like dogville and manderlay - make no attempt to allow sets to get in the way of telling the story. so any that might be filmed on soundstages, without sets, on theatre stages... films that focus your attention on the actors and their performances.

any help will be greatly appreciated.

Sleuth and Glengary Glen Ross have that feel, as does Opening Night. All are worth watching. In fact, I'd recommend checking out other John Cassavettes films because they're all very much in that vein e.g. Shadows, A Woman Under The Influence, Faces.

Some brilliant films in there.

thanks for your help, mike. I'll look into those. my lecturer suggested that I look at henry V for the way the set builds up from very little until we're actually in the 'real situation.' or something like that. I forgot to send it back when I was with screenselect so I'll have a look for it...

Luc Besson

Hey, I'm studying Luc Besson as a director for my A Level Media Studies Critical Research project, and I want to know your opinions of these topics:
  • -Is Luc Besson a practitioner of 'style over substance' when directing his films, or is he harshly criticised?
  • -Are films such as The Fifth Element and Leon French films, or Hollywood films by a French director?
Thankyou! :)

Vietnam War

Hey, i am doing my A Level Film Studies Coursework on the Vietnam War and how films portray it. Does anybody have any opinions on this subject? thanks:)

Hi there,

I guess my opinion is that some of the war films about Vietnam are just entertainment and nothing else and some are educational as well as informative. Has your course chosen any particular films for you to watch? Some of the best regarded Vietnam films are Platoon, Born On The Fourth Of July, Apocolaypse Now and Full Metal Jacket. All portray a gritty and grim view of the conflict and even offer sosme political views. The first two I mentioned are by Oliver Stone and he is a Vietnam Veteran.

Good luck with the course.

Chris.

the deer hunter is also an interesting film to study, which looks at the way vietnam has affected a small town in the US...
