Burton's films were always style of substance. His quirks have always overshadowed characterisation. In Big Fish all the emotional beats felt forced and artificial which took me right out of the film when in fact they were supposed to make me sympathise.

However, I think it’s unfair to compare him to Shyamalan.

M Knight lost the plot after Unbreakable. He started to believe his own hype as the “saviour of contemporary cinema”.

Burton might be singing the same song albeit with different notes, his vision at least appears to be steadfast.
