Default Dredd

As a Judge Dredd fan since I was about 7, I'm looking forward to this film more than any film scheduled for the next couple of years. Karl Urban is an interesting choice to play a young Joe Dredd. It will hopefully be a more faithful adaptation than Stallone's over the top ( and slightly camp) version. Don't get me wrong, I can watch and even guiltily enjoy that version- but it's not my Judge Dredd, it's a sub standard Stallone action film. I've got my fingers crossed for the new one though.

Karl Urban as JD.

I was a few years too young to read the first 2000ad but the first one I read was a revelation. The only comic character who comes close to Judge Dredd is Batman and he's got family issues to affect his crimefighting. Judge Dredd is an unstoppable badass. No morality, no compassion, no humanity, no other comic ever came close. Dredd is the first film I've really wanted to see for years. It's a darkhorse but I bet my shoes it's better than Dark Knight Rises or The Avengers.

I used to love a lot of 2000AD's output when I was a youth and the annuals were a regular staple on my Christmas list, fantastic Dredd stories in the Cursed Earth and the wacky Caligula story were great. Such a wealth of creativity, Strontium Dog, Rogue Trooper, Bad Kompany, Zenith, Nemesis and ABC Warriors.

But I had high hopes for this Dredd film, now I've only seen a few promotional stills, but a certain film magazine has old Joe on the front cover and I pray to God Urban doesn't pull that stupid face all the way through the film.

Talk about an upside down smile? You can take things too far, why pull that silly grimace? I know that's Dredd's stock expression, but in reality It looks ridiculous.

Judge Caligula was an inspired storyline that could only work in a series like Judge Dredd. City of the Damned, The Judge Child Block Mania, Necropolis and anything with Chopper or Judge Death are brilliant Judge Dredd stories. Dead Man was brilliant too but that wasn't a proper Dredd tale, it was BBQ Clint Eastwood Dredd with witches.Look closer at the new pictures. They look like Joe's meant to look. Judge Dredd looks like a constipated Karl Urban

That Empire cover is hysterical; thankfully, in the stills from the actual film, Urban doesn't appear to be gurning. The uniform still looks a bit shit though. I know it would have been difficult to reproduce the proportions of the comic uniform in real life, but the addition of a bulky kevlar vest and the much reduced dimensions of the body armour change the silhouette of the character so much he now looks like Boba Fett wearing an anorak.

I wouldn't have thought it was too tall an order to upholster Dredd with proper leathers either; how sweaty must Karl's crotch be, that he must be outfitted with a gusset of breathable lycra? Some film crews endure Jake Gyllenhal for months at a time- is it too much to ask that Dredd's makers should suffer the reek from Scotty's balls?

Surely this is the best thing that anyone has ever said in all time ever. Gussets of breathable lycra should be standard issue to everyone. I demand my breathable gusset. So, which kind of lycra gusset would you prefer, sir. A breathable one please, madam, make it snappy. And relax. Ptoing!

hope to god this film is better than the first film was. i used to read 2000AD up until 8 years ago when i moved to AUSTRALIA when it became difficult to keep up with it, but keep hoping they do more films for it as it has some really good charactors in it. was totally pissed off with original as within ten minutes dredd had taken off his helmet, wrong move there. sp effects were ok but yeah here's hoping this version is more faithful, wonder if Rogue Trooper giong to get a film or even the ABC Warriors.

ps forgive the spelling
