Default I bought it for the extras...

Which DVDs do you think have the best bonus features? Would you ever buy a DVD based solely on the bonus material? In the past ten years, my two most worthwhile DVD releases have been the Alien Quadrilogy and the Ultimate Matrix boxset. The special features and extended versions of the movies in the Alien Quadrilogy were incredible value for money, even at the £50 odd I paid on the initial release date. I think you can get it a lot cheaper now. Although the Matrix films are very hit and miss and miss, The Ultimate Matrix is worth the price. Docs revisiting the big effects scene in each film, commentaries from both fans and foes of the movies and it's got The Animatrix in there too. For a movie franchise that fell flat at the first hurdle, the DVD special edition is incredible. Anymore for any more?

I've never really watched all the making ofs as it seems to take away all the mystery and magic. Call me an idiot, but the kid in me likes to think it's all real.

But the best commentaries are Pegg and Frost, or the ones that use the characters from the films. But on the whole they tend to get overlooked.

I have a fetish for director's cuts and extended editions, couple that with an audio commentary and they're the features on a disc that will make or break me buying them.

I've little time for featurettes and promotional guff, Del Toro and Snyder give good extras though , especially the design process and thought process for Del Toro's work in particular makes for interesting viewing.

I secretly enjoyed 'The Green Lantern' and the Blu ray is rumoured to have an extended 14 minutes of footage, plus it will look glorious on Blu Ray, despite being an average film at best. But because of it's troubled inception, a commentary might make me pick it up.

I think for cinephiles like ourselves, anything that delves deep into the creative process is interesting for us, sadly most features result to little more than a few cast members talking about how good the film is, even if it isn't.

I'm also annoyed that as the industry continues to force us into the Blu Ray market by depriving ordinary DVD owners of all the good shit. 'The Town' I'm looking at you! I watched you at the cinema and this is how you repay me? For shame...

I love special features on DVD's, I watch and listen to them all. The movie would have to be at least half decent for me to buy it for the special features though.

Also, I do wish some would be what they actually claim to be - like "bloopers" that's 4 minutes of a jaunty tune and people laughing, but you have no idea what they're laughing at!! Show us the c**k-up!!
I don't even mind, and sometimes really like, features on the building of sets, etc. I don't just want to hear how much lead actor likes director and vice versa.

I enjoy the 'Making of' extras but I have never listened to a commentary, it just doesn't interest me at all.

I don't do commentaries either. Boring stuff. As for extras, the special edition of Black Hawk Down has a full documentary on the real mission which is excellent. Other good ones include Apocalypse Nows doc Heart of Darkness and the extras on the special ed of Dances With Wolves about the old west.
