Thumbs down DVD trailers and adverts: a rant…

Myself and my wife finally sat down to watch "Souce Code" last night - I enjoyed it, but couldn't help drawing comparisons with cult TV series "Quantum Leap" - anyway, my rant regards what happened when I initially inserted the DVD in our player…

Trailers began to play, which is more and more common, and no amount of menu button pressing would let us skip them, but at least the chapter skip button did. However, it didn't end there; then some adverts for Mars bars etc started and we couldn't even chapter skip, had to resort to fast-forwarding at X4 to get past until we eventually got the DVD menu.

Is it just me, or is this forced-advertising on DVDs p155ing off anyone else too?!

Ugh, I know. My parents like the trailers, but I bought a DVD for the frakking film, not to personally own minute-and-a-half trailers for films I've never been/ never will be interested in or for products I'll never buy! I can quite easily find 'em on TV, in the cinema or online (if I want to). Grr

I think ads don't have any place there. Trailers are fine if they can be skipped. Who wants to watch old trailers over and over again when re-watching the DVD a year or two later? I've been wondering about poor decisions by the home entertainment departments for years....

It is really annoying to get unskippable advertising on DVDs. If I've paid for the movie, I just want to see the bloody movie. I don't want to be sold stuff.

Although, there is a certain charm to watching a slightly older DVD and seeing trailers for films that now seem almost old. Interesting to see how they were marketed at the time.

While I do not mind trailers on DVDs, they should be under a special menu (thereby giving us the choice to view them if we wish) rather than forcing us to watch them before the film even begins.

This is not the only problem, though. Some DVD companies tend to have unwieldy loading times and various things before the main menu even appears, (such as the company logo etc), which cannot be skipped. With these DVDs we are not even allowed to begin the film from where we left off last time, which can prove highly irritating.

It's the patronising Thank You at the start that pisses me off these days.

You know what, just for that, I'm going to pirate your piece of shit movie anyway.
