Default Charles Laughton

Not only did Laughton direct the peerless Night of the Hunter, but he was also an incredibly sensitive actor, who embodied his characters. When you look at his portrayal of Henry VIII, it reminds you how ludicrous Rhys Meyers is in the role in The Tudors (as if you need a reminder).

Laughton, unfortunately, seems to slip under the radar these days, probably because he was never a pin-up, simply a superb character actor. A shame, because the man deserves to be remembered.

I find Laughton similar to someone like Ed Harris, a character actor who always puts in a good performance, from The Creepy Old House to Spartacus.

I assume you meant The Old Dark House, one of James Whale's best films.
Totally agree with your comment regarding Laughton's work. I can't think of any performance of his that I haven't liked.
A favourite is Billy Wilder's often under rated Witness For The Prosecution, in particular his scenes with the marvellous Elsa Lanchester.
