Case 39

Absolute load of rubbish, horror by numbers. Wasted 90 mins of my life last night watching it. Looks like it was made on a budget of £3.60 and I'd guessed the twist about 20 minutes into it.

District 9. Amazing film and the story was so different to normal sci-fi films. I was left wanting more and craved a sequal but the more I think about it the more I think a sequal couldn't live up to this masterpiece.

Default Green Zone

I don't like where all these reviews comparing it to Bourne are coming from. It's hardly anything like it, and gives a false impression of the kind of film to expect when going in.

I thought it was superb, Greengrass's ever-moving camera is a real fit for the modern warzone setting, it really does complement the action onscreen while still retaining cinematic quality. Despite it always moving, shaking and everything inbetween, the camera always manages to keep a focus on the action, I never felt disoriented once. Those complaining about it or that they can't see anything in the night-time scenes need to pay a visit to the opticians.

Matt Damon is great as always, putting in a solid performance without ever diverting attention from the storyline, and is backed up a sturdy supporting cast of people you barely see because of the erratic camera LOL!

If I had to pick on some aspects I thought were a bit hokey, it would have to be the storyline. Why? Well, you just know that this film won't be picking up any awards seeing as it's all about politicians possibly lying about the reasons for war, that, shock horror, there may not be an WMD's. This is where some Bourne comparisons are warranted, as it does get pretty damn farfetched. However, when watching the film it didn't bother me, I was too busy enjoying the spectacle.

4*. Let down by some plot issues, but a terrific ride nontheless.

Green Zone - 3.5 stars - Easy, breezy actioner. Matt Damon was excellent. Great supporting cast, especially Jason Isaacs' 'tache.

The Invention Of Lying - 1 star - The only reason we didn't turn this off was that we'd paid £3.99 on Sky Box Office! A one gag film of the lowest order. And I blimmin' love Ricky, so it hurt all the more...

Watched Say Anything last night as part of the Cusack Challenge. After a run of not so great 80s films it was good to see this again. 4/5.

Silent Hill

Shame, big shame. The reams of inspiration that the film makers could of used. All they had to do was lift the best parts from the first and second (possibly the most intelligent and thought provoking form of media from the late 90's) games. But no, instead they come up with a hackened, complicated mess. At one point a character almost talks to the camera for about 10 mins to explain what the feck has been going on, its really amatuer. The acting is suspect too, and the less said about Sean Beans accent the better. Fortunatly the film does get a few things right, the "look" of the alternate Silent Hill for a start, and several of the beasties, especially the Pyramid Head, although he was too violent and obvious in the film, he is much more of a mystery in the enigmatic and fantastic second game. The sound design is excellent too, although much of that is again ponced from the games.
An oppertunity missed, could of been a great adap, but yet again we are still waiting for that almost mythical decent GTF (Game to Film)

2.5/5

Bedazzled.
Um, I actually quite enjoyed this. I know I really, REALLY shouldnt of, but I kinda did. The story is daft, Liz Hurley's acting doesnt deserve to be called as such and its editing is so sloppy it could be a Pizza. But, Brendan Fraser is excellent, making great the poor script and doing the absolute best he can, he manages to convince (albiet as silly cartonn versions) as a Columbian Drug Lord, near Retarded Basketball player, Abraham Lincoln, the most sensitive man in the world and a highly articulate, sophistcated homosexual, all the while retaining elemnts of the original character. Dont get me wrong the film is guff, but I have to admit that Fraser is great and deserves far more than he seems to get.

2.5/5*

1.5 is for Fraser.

Furry Vengeance
2 stars

Took a 3 year old, a 12 year old and a 13 year old to a preview screening. 3 year old didn't have a clue what was going on but the rest of us enjoyed the slapstick. Lots of silliness involving a highly intelligent racoon, a carload of skunks and Brendan Fraser in a tangerine ladies tracksuit (with a pot belly). End credits were pretty good as well (and I'm not being sarky). And it was at the Empire Leicester Square, which is a mighty fine cinema...
