It's the critical appraisal that bothers me more. I wouldn't mind so much if everyone acknowledged that he's a bit crap but most seem to think he's some kind of creative genius.

Typical Hollywood, mistaking financial success with talent.

I think thats the main reason for my dislike of him. It winds me up no end how people bang on about him. I'm extremely surprised that Hoffman used the word artist to describe him. I've always held Hoffman in quite high regard, I think dissapointed sums it up.
I went to the cinema recently, to watch Thor, with a "geek" guy I know. He is the sort of person that creams all over JJ, the trailer came on for Super 8 and all he could talk about after the film was the trailer. I tried to point out all the things that is wrong with JJ and his films, it fell on deaf ears, he is reveared as some sort of God by a cedrtain group of film fans.
As for his films and TV, I didnt hate Star Trek, but in my eyes it was no more than a standard sci-fi fare, neither hateful or great, just a film. The rest, well the rest is a mixture of dire and dreadful that I would rather not talk about.
Its like you say Fortunes, if people didnt go on about him it wouldn't be an issue of contention. But as he seems to be elevated to this totally undeserved status by both his peers and his fans its really annoying.

To buck the trend a bit, I think Whedon is a hack. Seriously, I know there is love on here for him, but I cant see the fuss. I like Buffy and Angel on TV, but I cant see anything about his films that I enjoyed.
Serenity was poor, very poor. It felt like a bad pilot for a terrible TV show, its full of cliches and a has a "cheap" feel about it. His script for Alien Ressurection, hmmm, I know he says it was changed from his original ideas, which involved "comedy" moments according to him. Seriously? Was he going to lend the comedy moments of Buffy and Angel to an Alien film? And the fucking "New-Born" was his idea, the only difference was his didnt have eyes.

I cant belive he has been put in charge of The Avengers. I didn't think Marvel wanted a shoddy TV look for their biggest film ever.

I think you've just slated the fabulous cinematography of Jack Green, one of the greats and an Eastwood Favourite.

Serenity looks like Lawrence of Arabia in comparison to Star Trek, although familiarity with 'Firefly' is required to get the most out of it.

I'm delighted he's doing The Avengers. If he can bring half the charm of the firefly ensemble to it then it should be a thing to see. It really depends on how much writing he's done on it. It's someone else's screenplay I think

Maybe I have, maybe the problem is that the film was lauded as a sci-fi masterpiece, when in my eyes it was utter pish. Badly written, predictable story and bland characters. It felt too similar to Whedons TV stuff, which works fine on the small screen, but didnt translate on the biggun' for me.

I didnt see any of Firefly, I'm sure it was good, his TV stuff always is.

I would be willing to bet cash that The Avengers will be poor, although not as poor as if he was doing the screenplay.

As for Jack Green, yes he is a master, but surely the look of a film is, when it comes down to it, up to the Director, in this case Whedon. I will eat my hat if the The Avengers is good, Im the first to admit my mistakes.

J-man or K, could you move this to a new "Joss Whedon" themed thread, I fear I may of hijacked this one.

Anyway, back to JJ, hes a fucking tool.
