Gosling. I doubt he'd make a film like Prince of Persia.

As good as Gyllenhaal undoubtedly is, it's Gosling for me too. I've yet to see a flat performance, in fact he's been great in everything I've seen. From the much maligned Fracture and Half Nelson to the more enthusiastically received Drive and most recently The Ides Of March, he's delivered strong varied performances, full of charisma and charm. Even the by the numbers Murder By Numbers hinted at a very bright future. I must get round to checking out Lars And The Real Girl and The Believer at some point too.
Next one... Alan Rickman vs Jeremy Irons |

Few years ago I would've said Irons based on some incredible turns in his earlier career. Recently, though both have been signing up for more big budget films where thy're expecting a big pay check at the end. Where irons was laughable in Eragon, I though that Rickman, in the Harry Potter films shone above a cast of some of UK and Ireland's greatest talent. I have to say Rickman after that.

An obvious one, but I'm interested to know everyone's thoughts. Paul Newman or Steve McQueen? I've always been a really big Steve McQueen fan simply because he appeared effortlessly cool in any role and he's always been a hero/antihero of mine. The Great Escape always fits somewhere into my top five films.

Paul Newman hands down for me. He's pure class, whether a grizzled cop (Fort Apache the Bronx), experienced grifter (The Sting), ruthless mob boss (Road to Perdition), jaded mentor (The Color of Money) or disaster movie hero (The Towering Inferno - where McQueen also shines). As cool as Clint, with good looks, charisma and charm, Newman is a legend of the silver screen. I keep meaning to check out his other great films... among them Hud, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Cool Hand Luke and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

No more takers for Newman vs McQueen? How about this pair of living legends...
John Hurt vs Ian McKellen |

3rd post alert, sorry!
John Hurt for me. Exquisitely delivering a xenomorph through your chest cavity amid a shower of blood and Singapore noodles beats manipulating metal and breakdancing in Orthanc hands down. |

With Alien on his CV it has to be Hurt for me too. I like McKellen in most films I see him in but he's never had a chestburster.

And he was in this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bs81RjW4kvs and Watership Down and Spaceballs.
Did anyone know that they made a TV series of Watership Down about 10 years ago but Hurt didn't provide the voice of Hazel in it, he was General Woundwort. That was new to me.
