I only knew the name as the director of 'Invaders from Mars' but this wonderful essay by David Bordwell sheds considerable light onto an unsung hero of early (ish) cinema.
Well worth half an hour of your time if your interest in cinema goes beyond popcorn munching fare. http://www.davidbordwell.net/essays/menzies.php |

You've probably already completed a top 50 about this already, however I'd be curious to see your latest opinions on actors in either major films or even small independent films who truly deserved some honors for their performance and got nothing except for perhaps word-of-mouth throughout the industry. Michael Shannon is one of my favorite actors from his performance in "BUG", and most people I tell that to have never even heard of the film done by the same director of "The Exorcist". ...I want to see "BUG" as a stage play, but that's another top 50...

Did you see the piece on Michael Shannon in TF issue 187? Have you been watching him in Boardwalk Empire? |
