One word sums this film up for me....beautiful.
Beautiful acting Beautiful sets Beautiful cinematography Beautiful direction and not since seeing Avatar have I loved the 3D experience. This film sums up why I love the cinema so much, it took me out of reality for 2 hours and transported me to Paris in the 30's. The second half of the film is all about the pioneering of cinema and how I wished the pioneers were sat with me to see what they invented. I came out of the cinema with warm heart and maybe a little tear in my eye..........beautiful. **** Here's a link to Total Film's 4 star Hugo review. Added by Liz. Thanks. **** Last edited by Lizhawkins; 21-01-2012 at 04:16 PM. Reason: Added link to TF review |

I love your good reviews, Jaykay. I know you have had some terrible cinematic experiences when it comes to customer service and chavs but I also know that you're the least cynical/ jaded person on here when it comes to film reviews. I love the fact that you enjoy films with your kids without letting magazine reviews influence your reaction to them. Reviews I've read of Hugo have been average but based on yours I'll probably see it this month. Thankyou.

![]() I have always loved the cinema experience but it has always been more than just a film for me, its a couple of hours of getting out of reality and a couple of hours shared either with my dad when I was a kid and now shared with my kids. I don't take much notice of the reviews in the press but I do take notice of my fellow forumites on here as most of you feel the same way as me. There is a bit in Hugo where he talks about going to the cinema with his dad and how special it is, I was sat there with my son thinking the same thing. Hope you enjoy the film as much as I did. And it was a chav free cinema experience yesterday but then I went to Showcase instead of Vue. |

I fully agree with this review. I saw it yesterday and I was thrilled, enchanted and totally engrossed in the film.
Cinema is all about escapism and this delivered in spades. I had tears rolling down my cheeks by the end of it. I can't remember the last time I felt so emotional while watching a film. I loved how Scorsese put film on a par with books. I also loved how he used 3D. I have seen quite a few films in 3D but this is the first time I felt it was essential and really turned the film into something that more special (I never got to watch Avatar in 3D). This is a love letter to cinema, beautiful stories and art in general. It celebrates the cinema of old while at the same time boldly marches forward into the future. Before I saw it, I was really sceptical about Scorsese using 3D (why would a legendary director need such a gimmick?) but if there's a film which should restore your faith in 3D, this is it. Some people said that through The Adventures of Tin Tin and Hugo, Spielberg and Scorsese were competing. If that were the case, Scorsese won hands down (even though Tin Tin was pretty good). Highly recommended for people who love cinema. Thankfully, George Méliès is getting a resurgence in interest thanks to this. Last edited by ColouredPurple; 01-01-2012 at 02:19 PM. |

I'm so glad that someone else felt the same way as me. I too would have had tears but I tend to hold it in while in public and I can't let my boy see his dad crying at a film.
Thank you for taking the time to write your review and for feeling the same way about cinema ![]() |
