Puss in Boots
If Rango and (early) Shrek were to have a child, it would be called Puss in Boots.
This film combines the wild west theme of Rango together with the fairy tale theme of Shrek. The obvious question is 'Is it as good as its parents?'.
Not really, but it's still pretty good.
The story is an enjoyable romp and judging from the children's laughs in the audience, I can say children will really enjoy it. Good as the story is though, it's the acting which steals the show, particularly Salma Hayek as Kitty Softpaws.
What I didn't like was some references to pop culture. While the reference to Up might be seen as an homage from one animation studio to another, the reference to Fight Club was completely useless and out of place. It was obviously put in there for the adults in the audience to catch onto but still totally unnecessary. There might have been other references to pop culture which I missed.
I was surprised that Shrek doesn't feature at all in the film. I kept expecting his face to pop up somewhere. The studio clearly wants this film to stand on its own four paws -sorry, couldn't resist- rather than being a Shrek through the back door (that way they can make sequels without having to hark back to Shrek each time). That notwithstanding, I think Shrek fans would have liked to see Shrek having a little cameo.
Regarding 3D, it certainly made the film more enjoyable but it's hardly as essential as in Hugo (it has become my benchmark by which I measure 3D's worthiness).
