Bigger and bolder than the first one, great chemistry between RDJ & Jude Law. Jared Harris was good as Moriarty (didn't realise that he is the son of Richard Harris). Some funny moments that did make me laugh out loud. As with the first one it has a great score by Hans Zimmer.
It was great to see Stephen Fry as Sherlock's brother although not so great when he was naked. All in all a good film but not as good as the first one. **** Here's a link to Total Film's 4 star Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows review. Added by Liz. Enjoyable, although instantly forgettable. The use of slow motion gets a bit tiresome after a while too.

I saw it tonight and it's actually not bad. The speedy uppy slow motion bits annoyed me and RDJ seems to be trying a bit too hard to be cool these days but it's entertaining and pretty funny. 2.5/5

If someone were to ask me whether this film is good fun, I would answer 'yes'. If someone were to ask me whether this is a good Sherlock Holmes film, I would answer 'not really', or not what I imagine a Sherlock Holmes film to be.
The last time I read Sherlock Holmes was many moons ago so I don't remember much but unless my memory is playing tricks, I don't remember so many explosions. For me, Sherlock is a thinking man's character who is supposed to solve intricate mysteries while sucking on his trusty pipe. A Sherlock Holmes film should look more like a recondite puzzle than an action film. This version is very Hollywood-ised Maybe its biggest fault is its huge budget. When you have such a large budget, you can't help but make things blow up every couple of minutes. Maybe with a smaller budget, more energy would have been put into a more imaginative script. It's not all bad though. It's certainly better than the first film and Robert Downey Junior and Jude Law make a good team. I'm a big fan of Stephen Fry so it was wonderful to see him on the big screen. I love him so much I don't even care whether he bothers putting any clothes on or not. I thought the slow motion parts were done well even if there were possibly too many of them. Overall, it's a fun night out but when you think back on it and try to remember the case, you realise that there wasn't much of a case to begin with. If a fan of the original stories/novels asked me to recommend an on screen Sherlock Holmes, my top recommendation would still be the 1984/1985 series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes with Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes and David Burke as Dr Watson. |

i didn't realize bout jared's parentage until AFTER i watched the movie and read an article on it. now, that i know, i'm like how did i miss THAT??
anyway...pretty tough crowd for the movie here. my wife and i find the movie much better than the first one and really absorbing. i do get some people who feel the slo-mo's being used too much, but for me, that's just one of the trademarks of this new, modern Sherlock to show his methodical ways in getting outta jams. i love, especially, when he and Moriarty trade slo-mo visual thoughts of how each one would counter the other's moves...that's just brilliant. they're fighting violently beautiful, all in their genius minds..and yet, when they do do it in real life, it takes but just seconds. i'm really digging on Sherlock (or "Sherly" as his lovable bro would call him) and Moriarty's showdown. and the latter's henchman..he ranks alongside the best Bond henchmen of all time. he's really a badass and menacing..a force sherly and watson have to reckon with. all n all, i'll give this 4.5/5 |

I saw it on New Year's Eve (unlike the first one, which I saw on New Year's Day 2010 :L ) with my boyfriend. Thought it was pretty good, shame Noomi Rapace got a bit lost though, and with all the slow-mo, it felt like it dragged a bit. Other that that, the ending dropped my jaw from a cliff (despite being hinted at earlier, talk about a Chekov's gun!). Ooh, and this was my first introduction to Moriarty, what a character.
4/5 overall, not quite as good as the first, but not utterly terrible either. ![]()

I enjoyed it. I didn't think the slow-mo slowed things. I thought that it gave the scenes in which they highlighted bite. I do think Irene Adler was more fun to watch than Noomi Rapace ... Nevertheless, Holmes offered as much excitement and intrigue as the first, I felt.

Very enjoyable film. Caught it randomly last night (found ourselves at the cinema wthout planning it), and really enjoyed it, as with the first I wasnt expecting much at all, and found myself really getting in to it. I enjoyed the slo-mo bits, I actually thought at the time that it was the best use of slow-mo I had seen in ages. Younger Harris was great as Holmes foil, and the end was great too. Rapace got lost, but maybe because the other personalities on show were so big.
4/5
