I'm well up for this: big fan of The Proposition and love, love, love Jessica Chastain... Has anyone seen it? Is TF's 3 stars fair?

Lawless, a period set crime film, is an absolute mess.
It has no discernible direction, introducing characters both too cartoonish (Pearce) and completely pointless (Oldman, literally not needed). The central performances of the brothers three help hold the film together but the shoe-horned in romances make it bulge and bloat until nothing seems connected. The violence is done better in most comparable films and the ending feels like a complete add-on. Much like Hillcoat's earlier work (The Proposition: taking a great premise and doing nothing with it, and The Road: serviceable but not as good as the source material) Lawless is nowhere near flawless, and a huge disappointment. |
