Please, I beg you, dry yourself behind the ears and then come back. Consider carefully what you're saying. You're talking to very experienced people here on this forum. Of course I don't know best. Film is too subjective for anyone to "know best".

But please do me the courtesy of allowing me an opinion. The fact I'm young does not immediately invalidate my viewpoint.

TomBeasley, you're allowed an opinion. For the record, the original remark about excitement that you took offence to was mere tongue-in-cheek sarcasm, a humour technique often used in banter by Old Guard members. You can tell who these are by their tag. We all have our personal idea of what passion for cinema means and how we define it. Feel free to discuss general passion for film on another thread or on your blog.

This thread, however, is about Cabin in the Woods, further posts must be on this topic. Thank you.

As Kiba so rightly points out, some of us Old guard will come across as sarcastic, basically because some of us are old and the older you get the more bitter you become..its the law.

Don't let it put you off, we welcome you with open arms but we may ruffle your hair from time to time.

Will the success of a film so self referential, that requires such an understanding of film to be appreciated, signify the point of no return? Might genre buffs outweigh the popcorn munchers? If so there will be no return to the 'Golden Age', we destined to watch movies about movies, and maybe in ten years, movies about movies about movies. Until one day future film buff's heads will explode.

Similar questions to yours, Flynners, are asked in this review Seven magazine - The Cabin in the Woods
It does contain some spoilers, but this is a spoiler-friendly thread I believe.

samples:
"Studios routinely defer to the whims of teenage fanboys, needing consumers with high disposable incomes and low attention spans – for only these viewers can summon the enthusiasm required for some of the shonky, derivative product being cranked out."
"The superior fanboy-bait The Cabin in the Woods depends upon its attention-grabbing plot chicanery..."
"The fanboys at least, should be content: this is a film that speaks with some sympathy about their role as dorky grist to the corporate mill."

"Cooler heads may find Cabin less groundbreaking."

I think that reference suggests something about you, not me, Flynners.

I just watched CitE for the first time. I didn't really know a lot about this film beforehand because I have purposely been avoiding teen slashers for a while (just got bored). Anyway, I saw a trailer online and decided to have a look.
Like a few people have mentioned, I spent a lot the movie recognising references and nods to the genre buffs. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, in fact I would go so far as to say the'homage paying' is probably the flicks saving grace. I don't really find the need to come online and find a discussion shout a film i've just watched (maybe I should), but after watching this movie I had the urge to check out what the hardcore thought. To be honest, I'm not too sure what I think, but Something is telling me this was intended.
Overall, i'd like to love this movie. Having a bit of back story and maybe a prequel(?) Should make me love it more. First half - 6/10, second half 8/10.

I think a sequel should be put out in video game format.
