I was kind of hoping for more with this film. I went in with high expectations after Johnson's Brick, and was expecting something similarly intricate and tightly woven. But unfortunately the elements built up in the first two acts don't really pay off in the end - it kind of builds up this mythology to the story, then doesn't really use it to its potential.
That said, its characters are much more distinctive and sharply drawn than a lot of actioners, and only at the end does it drift into cliche. The emotional stakes compensate for some its shortfalls. Basically, those reviews comparing it to Twelve Monkeys were overstating it a bit, but its a heartfelt, above-average sci-fi thriller. I'd give it a 3/5 |

Good film, but not quite worthy of all the 5 star praise it's getting IMHO. Interesting story, but as with any sci-fi I guess you're going to get a lot of "why didn't he just do X?" - which is what I heard a bit of when leaving the screening.
Also to be a bit of a pedant, if you're going to use prosthetics or whatever to make JGL look like Willis, why not do his ears too. Totally different shape ![]() |

What did you think of the prosthetics in general? I was really distracted by them most of the film... although it was quite enjoyable seeing Gordon-Levitt imitating Willis' tics and expressions.

I quite liked it, and the scenes where they showed him aging were pretty cool. I think he did a decent job of not just doing a cheap impression of him.

The ending left me thinking "WTF?"
There was such a build up to what I was looking forward to being an epic closing sequence, and then..............that.............which had us all looking at each other mouthing "Is there a bit missing from the end?" I loved the way it had the audience rooting for one, then the other, then the other again and back and forth because you were never quite sure who was supposed to be the good guy and who was playing the villian, it was a really twisty turny journey up until the inexplicable ending. Inexplicable because even though we all understood what was going on, it never really answered any questions about what went on, and with a film like this, where you NEED a clean cut ending to explain all that's gone before it, it was such a dissapointment. It's like finding your perfect bit of furniture for your house, and then finding it's 5mm too big to fit into your room. 5* for 98% of the film, which drops down to 0*'s at the end. |
