Default On the Road

I like road films. I like little known, weird European films. I like experimental films. I don't expect every film I watch to be action packed.

But this was boring. What you get here is endless scenes of people hugging, smoking and having sex. The locations change but that doesn't really matter. You can't really tell one place from another.

In the first half of the film, it's tolerable. You get a sense of the freedom experienced by these young people but by the second half of the film you start wishing that something, anything, will happen.

The biggest problem the film has is that it doesn't have any plot whatsoever. And it's long. It goes on and on for more than two hours without anything really happening or changing.

When the film started we were a total of four people in the cinema (everyone else was presumably watching Skyfall). After the first hour, the other three left and I was left alone. What kept me there was the fact that I never walk out of a film and the fact that I had paid for it, but I was trying really hard to stay on my seat and not to fall asleep.

Pretentious and trying way too hard to be cool. I don't know how TotalFilm gave it such a positive three star rating. I'd give it two stars at best for recreating the 1940s nicely, a nice jazzy soundtrack, some interesting scenes and decent acting. But the whole thing was a waste of time and money. No wonder it took forever to be made.

Has anyone else seen this? What did you think? Maybe knowing the source material, of which I personally know nothing, will make this film more tolerable.
