Little bit of a bump, but I gotta add to this.
My top three would have to be Brando, Nicholson and DeNiro; they all have something really powerful about their acting style, from the method acting that DeNiro and Brando really pushed to that controlling presence they hold onscreen.
The Shining, The Godfather, and Taxi Driver are the three movies that demonstrate that best IMO (Although Chinatown, On The Waterfront, and Cape Fear are also pinnacles of acting).
