Mankind develops a malevolent self aware computer, uncovers the existence of extra-terrestrials and the possibility of a unified consciousness that may explain human action at its most fundamental level. 2001 deliberates the driving force behind mankind's progression and development, or lack therof. It ultimately explores every significant EVENT in human history as well as its potential consequences, most significantly current human apathy towards discovery and progression which is ironically reflected in most criticism... And you call it uneventful............
But you can still call it boring if you like, but then you would be proving Kubrick's point.
