Default Gangster Squad

The gangster genre is a pretty tough nut to crack, as the bar has been set so incredibly high by previous movies (Godfather, Goodfellas, etc.) Gangster Squad comes up a little short in this respect, providing an enjoyable (though instantly forgettable) experience, with some strong performances across the board. Penn is clearly having a blast as Mickey Cohen, and both Brolin and Gosling have their moments to shine. However, this movie is lacking anything special to make it stand out from the pack, although if you’re a fan of people walking in slow motion with fedoras and tommy guns, you’re in luck.

Rating: 7/10.

Default Les Miserables

Not having seen the musical beforehand seems to have worked in my favour here, as in spite of the wave of negativity about it “not being a patch on the stage show”, I was absolutely blown away by this movie. Epic in scope, with stirring, moving performances across the board (give Hathaway her Best Supporting Actress Oscar now, seriously) and some bold directorial choices – such as the inspired decision to have all the actors sing live – this is an absolutely breathtaking film from start to finish. The vocals may miss a beat here and there (these are actors singing rather than singers acting), but the overall effect is still world class. Highly recommended.

Rating: 8.5/10

I would do the same if my bloody pre ordered in December bluray would arrive.

Watched horrible bosses on sky the other day. A lot more fun than i was expecting. Best comedy I've seen since anchorman. Worth watching just for Jamie foxx who had an amazing name.

Dredd. My favourite film of last year, without a doubt. I can't think of anything bad to say about it. Maybe Mega City isn't quite the city I know from the comics but Urban IS Dredd, the stylised violence makes the film look amazing despite its smallish budget and the whole film has a Verhoeven style satirical edge that makes it the only film that's come close to being effectively comparable to Robocop. The Raid plot comparisons are groundless too. Similar plots have appeared in Judge Dredd comics on a regular basis since the Apocalypse War. Excellent 4.5/5

Equilibrium: Bale is his usual charismatic self while kicking the shit out of Brian Connelly before having a schoolyard sword fight... With guns and looking like a couple of bInts have a crappy slap fight waving their wrists at each other.
According to The Times "the fight scenes are delirious", I think they meant 'hilarious'.
There was one scene where boring Bale discovers a record palyer and pulls a Shawshank, now, obviously this set him off, but they could have made so much more of it, rather than a minor scene.

So, no, not a fan.
Utter blige.

Les Miserables

Been looking forward to this having seen and enjoyed the stage show a few times. Worries set in having seen trailers and reviews - would Russell Crowe fuck up my favourite song? Would Anne Hathaway be too annoying and overact it?

Sigh of relief then that this is a decent film. There are some flaws - some of it looks way too much like they are on a film set, and some performances are better than others. But overall a real crowdpleaser.

Anne Hathaway's brief performance really is very touching, and Hugh Jackman holds it all together well. Sacha Baron Cohen steals every scene he is in. Of course its all about the songs and for the most part they are a delight to watch. Some have said its too long but it really does go from song to song and you can only imagine the furore if they'd left someones favourite song out.

First film of the year that I'll definitely go to see again.

127 Hours

Finally got round to watching this with Mrs Hat and my son, we all enjoyed it but we all had to look away at the crucial part of the film. James Franco was really good.
