I was meaning to ask about McClennan's absence, I enjoyed arguing with that guy. I had hoped my post about the Mist would draw him out...
Too much to fully reply to but to summarise - Cameron is not a good writer (Unobtanium? Come on). Avengers Assemble was... eh. I enjoyed the action quite a lot, and there was some amusing dialogue, but yeah those characters were obnoxious, especially Stark. Whedon's alright in my books but there were some horrific lines in it - it actually took me two attempts to watch it through. The first time I gave up after the bit where Johannson's character says: 'Loki, you're surrounded! Drop the sword of power!' or something similar, without a trace of irony. Made me physically wince.
JJ Abrams can just suck it.
I actually side with morris on the dark/gritty angle - I think if a film's more realistic like TDK it gives the action a bit more impact. There's nothing unrealistic about TDKR per se, but all those loose ends... with
the Dark Knight, even though its no less self-important (no criticism) than
Rises, it's woven together well enough that there's a mounting tension in the storyline.
Rises just doesn't tie things together plausibly--which would be fine except that its pushing its own sense of realism, which means its more noticeable when it doesn't reach its own standards.
I would say TDKR is better than Avengers Assemble, but only because I like that kind of film more. AA is fun, but not nearly as memorable or cool.

Haha, brilliant. You speak the truth, I do absolutely f***ing love it when the wheels do that sideways thing. I've tried working out what exactly they're supposed to be doing but my mind can't wrap around it. It's damn cool though.
BTW, you've both said stuff about Nolan that I wanted to put up for debate... moved it to another thread, this post is getting looong.

Moments like that are pretty cartoonish. And in a nutshell why I prefer the darker stuff. Speaking of cartoons - Cartman as BANE is brill
