Having to read The Silmarillion for my book group. Not quite as awful as I was expecting but still pretty bad - it's just a procession of names populated by cyphers. Absolutely no depth at all but the occassional good scene makes it readable enough.

Sad news for literature in general yesterday. Iain Banks has announced his cancer is terminal and he has a matter of months to live. One of the modern greats of writing and an icon of Scottish popular culture. I downloaded the Wasp Factory for my kindle. I plan to read it again, remember and praise this great before he's gone.

A Streetcat named Bob is a heartwarming tale of a cat and his man friend and I'm enjoying it. Cost only £3.85 from amazon, incl post so if you know a catlover, it's a nice little gift. I received it as one of my birthday pressies.
I can't say anything good about Breathless by Dean R Koontz. I've never been a fan of Koontz but he has lost the plot and the muse- big time. This book was not scary or even vaguely suspenseful. I kept plodding away at it, hoping it would improve, but it turned into a tale of white fluffy creatures, come to save the world, and was like a cross between Bambi, Watership Down and ET!! You suck, Koontz. I'm not impressed. Mrs Cat picked up the book cheaply from a charity shop but I will strike him from my list in future. |

I finally finished Neverwhere. Fun read, even though the end was predictable. Next time I'm in London, I'll look more closely
![]() I still have to finish a Steve McQueen biography and am only halfway through a book about the Oberst Redl scandal. He was a high ranking officer in the Austrian K&K army under Kaiser Franz Joseph and turned out to be a (bad) spy. The real scandal was however that they let him take his life instead of arresting him, so a lot of questions have never been answered. Really interesting topic, but badly written. I'll probably check if there's a kindle version of A Streetcat named Bob before I finish that one. |

There is indeed
I'm going to LA in a few weeks and long flights bore me to death, so I'm starting to load up on stuff I haven't already read. Bob is going to get off the street and travel to California. ![]() |
