POINT BLANK (1967) - That rarity; a commercial film that poaches some ideas from "art-house" movies and doesn't look pretentious for doing so. A career criminal (Lee Marvin) is double-crossed by an old friend (John Vernon) and sets out to get the money he was cheated out of (before being shot). What he really wants, of course, is the life he had before the double-cross, but he'll settle for what he can get. The movie jumps around in time, inserts dreams and fantasies into the action, and yet never slows down or dampens the suspense. Equally rare, this is a thriller about revenge that reminds you that what you usually wind up with is a mouth full of ashes at the end.

Plenty of fun! some definite laugh out loud moments, and would sit through it again if a friend wanted to watch it. But perhaps not a third time. 6/10 for strick comedy value

Surrogates. Overly complex and fairly tedious. Willis was awful and the whole thing felt rushed and half completed. 2/5
Crazy Heart. Every bit as good as they said. Jeff Bridges deserved his Oscar for this and Maggie Gylenhall shines. Good music and even colin Farrel has the sense to downplay his character nicely. superb entertainment. 5/5

In cinema: Predators
I found it really enjoyable. Obviously it's going to be pretty formulaic and without much surprises along the way, but plenty of good action, Brody fit well in the lead, and the rest of the cast looked to be having fun with it. The samurai showdown and the ring of fire were great touches. 3 1/2 out of 5 On DVD: Watchmen Second viewing seemed to emphasise just how bloody long the film is and, as expected, sags more than once throughout. Great story, obviously, that remains remarkably faithful to the book, although the director's taste for visual flair (dodgy gore effects, above all) distracts slightly at times. Eager to catch the Ultimate Cut complete with Tales of the Black Freighter but might like to leave it a while before I do. 3 out of 5 |

What is it with that film, its pants and yet I have now seen it three times, its not that I like it as such, I just keep ending up watching it, I dont even bleedin' own it!
The Last Samurai *sigh* I wanted so much for this when it came out, and low and behold I was dissapointed. The film is not a total train wreck, it is ruined by a only a few, yet major factors. One, Tom Cruise, he is by no means a terrible actor, and disregarding the fact that I cant stand him, he just isnt right for the role at all. He can't convey the emotion of a man who is haunted by what he has done in the past and now sees redepmtion in the people who have captured him, it just doenst work. Two, the Hollywood ending, we all know why it had to be done, but did it really have to be done? It really ruins the film for me, and Im sure many others. The things it gets right? The fight scenes are suitably chunky and gritty, some of the cinamatography is enchanting, if a tad obvious. The best thing about the film by a country mile is the Japanese cast, beautiful and subtle acting, in my eyes it really is a master class in acting this way, its really excellent, they convey far more emotion than a pretend drunk Tom Cruise shouting (rather comically) for SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII I A decent film, let down by Tom Cruise and a gay ending. 3/5

Iron Giant
Recently digging through my DvD collection and found one of my old favourites, haven't seen it in a long time and to date remains my favourite Jennifer anniston film. ![]() Having read the book as a child I was initially dubious of the ranslation a U.S. setting, but the cold war vibe totally works and a story about a boy and his potentially genocidal robot is just great. The traditional animation is well done and beautifully married with some of the computer work, the Iron Giant , vulnerable and well characterised as the giant fish out of water, the scene where he's trying to fix the train tracks always makes me laugh. So many memorable characters, the NSA/CIA guy in particular, played very well. Attempting to come across as spook/G-Man cool for the most part, but has several 'WHAT THE F*^& JUST HAPPENED!" moments. Even Harry Connick Jr can't spoil this film, his smig spouting beatnik lingering just on the right side of cool/dork. I don't know why I love this so much, perhaps my fascination of robots, the beautiful animation, the simple tale of a boy and his robot. A theme that made the first 'Transformers' so special. I'm not being very objective, perhaps some of the animated models are a little too big on the hands, but the scenery is breathtakingly drawn, from the opening waves crashing against the fishing boat, to the beauty of the rural Americana. So in summary the best film to star Jennifer Anniston, Vin Diesel, Harry Connick Jr and a big fuck off robot? ROCK! TREE! ROCK! 4.5/5
