The Wolfman.
Bought this on blu ray for a tenner and really enjoyed it. I really cant see why it got such bad press. Its got the gothic feel spot on. Lovely to see and very moody. Alright the make ups a bit schlocky but the gore is ok and its not awful by any means. Acting is adequate and Emily Blunt is as usual gorgeous. Her looks really suit period movies like this. I loved it. 4/5

Default 'Die Anotheer Day'

Rooting through the garage at my folks place found a copy of 'Die Another Day', now be warned this was no doubt a purchase from my late father from dubious sources down the local pub. But I thought I'd give it a spin as it has Toby Stephens in, who I rather like.

I'm not a Bond fan, but liked the Dalton films, that's how Bond should be played in my opinion and found Goldeneye and Casino Royale (Daniel Craig) goofily entertaining and 'Bourne..' derivative respectively.

But...

The Brosnan years are total clag, from the smug one liners to an irrelevant opening action set piece, retarded defibrillator scene and a hand held machine gun with 'Infinite ammunition' it was just shite. The action and theme is so dated, compared to today's gritty actioners it made it unwatcheable.

Although I did get unintentional laughs when the subtitles appeared...

"For your consideration"

Dubious origins indeed, but I nearly choked on my green tea to think someone genuinely entered a third rate bond film into a an awards short list.

Class! I love you Dad.

I've had one of the best runs of films ever recently.

I'm particularly stingy when it comes to handing out ratings.
Have only ever rated one film 10/10 (Fight Club) and less than ten 9/10s.

Most very good films get an 8/10 from me. The last 9/10 I gave was to Deasth Proof actually, which I LOVED! Before that, it was The Machinist.

Anyway, recent films rated:

Monsters - 8/10
Inside - 8/10
Martyrs - 6.5/10 - this maybe needs a rewatch.
Network - 7/10 - Very much of it's time, and worth watching. Possibly would have gotten a higher score if it hadn't aged. Still relevant though.
Black Book - 8/10 - Really impressed, and not the typical Verhoeven fare.
Zombieland - 8/10
The Orphanage - 8/10 - Really creepy (almost had to put the light on) and an end I didn't seem coming which was satisfying despite not being typically happy.

Toy Story 3
Brilliant! Has all the childish escapades of the previous two but this time round the emotional heart of the film is a more adult feeling of redundance. Andy has grown up and the toys are a casualty of this, longing to be played with one last time(that couldn't sound more obscene). Really touching and up there with Up in the emotional stakes
Although here it's a bit more subtle.4/5
Beauty and the Beast
Still as good as I remember. Classic Disney with the most memorable tunes. I prefer Aladdin though.3/5
The new tweenie vampire/werewolf film
I was subjected to watching this eyeball offender last night and I can remember nothing about it, not even the name. Are kids today all so boring. Beige emo crap. 1/5

'Enchanted'

*Giggles like a school girl*

Damn
i enjoyed this far more than I should, from all the gentle Disney self parody, to the catchy songs and amazing performances from Marsden and Adams.

Only downside is the talent by pass of that bloke from Grey's Anatomy whose only memorable acting performance, in my humble opinion, was infecting the cinema in 'Outbreak' with a killer sneeze.

God damn monkey smugglers will be the death of us all!

3/5

Caught up with a few films over Christmas, all of them animated and all of them at the behest of a five year old:

The Princess and The Frog:
Like most of us, I had grown totally disillusioned with anything Disney that didn't have the Pixar prefix, but this one has restored all faith. It helps that Lasseter is running Disney and understands what makes a classic Disney film.
This one has it all, a beautiful Princess, a likeable hero (who spends most of the film as a frog, admittedly) and a charismatic villain that will join the ranks of Cruella D. Ville as one of the true greats. It has a great supporting cast and some absolutely fantastic songs that you aren't embarrassed to sit through. By the end you'll be welling up and there's a neat little twist that you don't tend to get from Disney stories. The animation is fantastic and I absolutely fell in love with this film. Up there with the Jungle Book for me. An utter joy. Welcome back, Disney. It's been too long.

Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs:
Great fun. Harks back to the crazy cartoons we used to get as kids and the best role Mr. T has ever had. Genius.

How To Train Your Dragon:
Another classic animation in a year full of them. It's been said that is a warning about messing with Mother Nature, but it came across as more an allegory for the Iraq War. Exciting stuff. Wish I 'd seen it in 3D .

Toy Story 3:
What more need be said about this one that hasn't been said already. The end with the furnace will get me every single time. But not half as bad as the last time Andy plays with the gang.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit?:
Still holds up even today. Blu-Ray release please!!!

Guess you noticed a similar theme with the three reviews I posted. They were all Christmas presents for children.

Really? Damn, I was quite looking forward to that film, even went as far as pre-planning a trip to the cinema, but sadly Wigan only shows Jennifer Anniston films or cartoons in 3D, so i was deprived of Peter Weir goodness unless went to the big city.

Glad I didn't, I saved five pounds and bought 'Scott Pilgrim..' on a whim instead, sounds like I made a wise decision.

Little Fockers - same level as funny as the others ie a couple of chuckles but meh.

Love and Other Drugs - For fans of Anne Hathaway's tits and Jake Gyllehaals arse, a win. Would rather have seen a comedy about a drug sales rep without the sickly love story thrown in.

It turned out to be a boner joke double bill.
