Orphan
This is a generic evil child thriller but one that successfully builds the tension throughout to culminate in an unexpected shock of an ending. There's reasonable performances from the cast and a bleak snowbound feeling of depression from the outset. 3/5

I think you meant to write "Ludicrous cop out of an ending"

Okay. An unexpectedly ludicrous cop out of an ending.
Would it have been more enjoyable if the girl really turned out to be a squirrel?

I watched The Next Three Days on Sunday afternoon and was a bit disappointed it took 2 hours and 15mins to tell the exact same story as Anything For Her, which lasted 1 hour 40 mins.

A classic example of Hollywood padding - and I'm not talking about Russell Crowe.

However, I am glad I watched it because now I know about Moran Atias. I'm in love.

Punisher: Warzone

... and for that I can only apologise.

Inglorious Bastards:
Some classic Tarantino tension and a fantastic new Nasty Evil Nazi for the ages. Very good. Up there with Pulp Fiction for me, but unlike Pulp, I don't think I'll sit through it all that often.

Moulin Rouge:
I could watch this film again and again. Brilliant, brilliant film making.

Default Zodiac

I've seen this film more times than I can recall but I needed something brilliant to rinse my mind of having watched the utterly dreadful Orphan the night before.
In any case, Zodiac is a beautifully understated, slow-burning, epic character study, and so much more than just an 'unsolved true crime' or 'whodunnit' mystery. It befits its huge, sprawling time period in every sense and is a thoughtfully composed study in the nature of obsession that allows its three leads time to breathe and develop. 5/5, without question!

Kuffs
This was on TCM the other night so I gave it a watch. It's a complete ego vehicle for Slater and that ego is really irritating as he talks to the camera and tries to engage the audience but just comes over as slimy and dislikeable. The plot could be a direct lift from any number of Lethal Weapons or Die Hards and there's even a farting dog for fans of Turner and Hooch and K9. Even 20 years ago it was obvious that Slater would never deliver on the promise he showed in Heathers. Was he even that good in Heathers?

Not unless hamming it up like a poor man's Jack Nicholson counts as acting. I haven't seen Heathers for a while but the strength of the film as I remember it was the script and satire.

I was actually starting to think that myself. He was always a bit crap.

Love this film. The themes of loneliness, despair, fear, realisation, optimism, resignation, determination and rage - all exquisitely shot by Boyle. Murphy is raw, vulnerable and electrifying, delivering a performance of maturity and depth. You willingly undertake his harrowing journey, feeling his anguish upon discovering his parents and sharing in the optimism of new-found friends. The frenetic mansion meltdown is tense and terrifying in equal measure. My only gripe is the Army not revealing themselves to the foursome until Frank has been unnecessarily infected. I know this is required to set up the final act but it feels wrong and doesn't sit with the realism of the rest of the film in depicting an unreal scenario. Still, a superb watch and a well deserved 4/5 for me.
