Default Films like OldBoy and Ichi The Killer

Hi

I am looking for films similar to OldBoy and Ichi The Killer - not necessarily japanese- but they do seem to do them quite well.

Any suggestions?

thanks

Well for one OldBoy is Korean not Japanese. Similar films would be A Bittersweet Life, Lady Vengeance, Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, The Chaser, Audition and Battle Royale.

I'll second Bittersweet Life, Sympathy and Battle Royale. Would also add The Infernal Affairs Trilogy, Shiri,One Night In Mongkok, Hard Boiled and the original Bangkok Dangerous to the mix.

Nowhere To Hide. One of the msot deliriously inventive films I've watched. Yeah, it's a personal favourite. Pretty standard Cop Film formula, yet the execution is superb. Constant playing with sound and image, mainly through use of colour and speed, turns it into something rather special. Fascinating watch if you want to look at it form a technical standpoint. Silly sense of humour too, which is always a plus in my books.

Personally I always preferred the directors other films; The Duelist and in particular M where his more visual style of story telling seemed to work a bit better.

I enjoy Duelist, but find it more lightweight and less fun that Nowhere To Hide. M is a superb film though.

Old Boy had me on the same mad scramble for films of the same ilk. Try Thirst, same guy directing, but much better all round. It's a spin on the vampire flick. Also, I'm A Cyborg, But That's OK. Same guy again, this time at his best. You won't see another film like it. Not really cult, but if you haven't seen Tell No-one, the French thriller, I'd catch that, too. Near faultless movie.

I wouldn’t class Thirst and I’m A Cyborg… as the director’s best work. Sure the direction and editing style was classic Wook but the plots in both films were all over the place. If you want to see Park Chan-Wook at his best, other than the Vengeance Trilogy, then JSA is the way to go.

Another recommendation I’ve got is Breathless; managed to pick this up the other week and was very impressed by it.
